Ms. Burke USI History

Can you name some of the main religions in the colonies? What was happening in England during colonization? How did King Henry VIII impact colonization? Why was the Pope so against King Henry VIII?

Begins the Protestant Revolution in Europe with his 95 Theses Biggest complaint = buying entrance into heaven (indulgences)

Led by William Bradford Were called Separatists Wanted to “separate” from the Church Purely Christian English church, no elements of the Roman Catholic church Established the Plymouth Settlement in New England What is the Mayflower Compact?

The Puritans wanted to escape religious persecution in England What was happening in England? As soon as they got to the colonies  set up their own religious persecution! There was NO religious freedom in the Puritan colonies You were only allowed to be a Puritan! The Congregational Church grows out of this All other New England colonies start to follow this idea (except Rhode Island)

Not everyone was Puritan! BUT everyone had to follow Puritan rules Only members of the Puritan controlled Church could vote and be a member of the General Court The Court of Law  General Court Male White Educated Stock holders in the Joint Stock Company (wealthy) Super Quick Review: M.B.C.

If you… Missed church Cursed Were lazy (IDLE) …you were flogged / punished! Puritans v Pilgrims Video “Idleness is the devils work!”

Anyone who didn’t follow the Puritan and John Winthrop’s rules were called Nonconformists or Dissenters Severely punished! Fined / Whipped / Imprisoned Anne Hutchinson and Roger Williams were banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony for their dissenting beliefs Found the settlements that will become Rhode Island!

3 months in which accusations of witchcraft were made against men and women 100 – 200 arrests 19 people were hung 1 man was pressed to death under heavy stones 1 man was stoned to death 2 dogs were put to death

John Winthrop: “We shall be as a city upon a hill, the eyes of all people are upon us.” What does this mean?

Eventually, other religions do come to the colonies Roman Catholicism Judaism Lutheranism Protestantism Anglicanism The Quakers Presbyterians

William Penn is one of the most famous Quakers Leader of the Pennsylvania Colony Promoted the ideals of religious tolerance Against slavery and war Strongly against the Church of England (Anglicans)

From 1685 – 1688, King James II attempted to change the entire society of the colonies James II was Catholic and was trying to replace Protestant institutions with Catholic ones 98.4% of the colonists were Protestant Protestants were afraid of both Catholics and the religious turmoil that they ran from! James II is overthrown and King William III & Queen Mary II take the English throne
