Is Ethics Possible?

What would happen if a certain psychological theory of human nature were true? Then the study of Ethics would be futile!!!

What is this theory?

Psychological egoism

What is psychological egoism? It is a theory of human nature that states that, by nature, we are born so as to always pursue our interest, even if it means bringing harm to others.

Is this an ethical theory? NO!!!!!! It is a psychological theory.

What are its main points? We are born selfish By nature we are selfish There is nothing we can do about it We have no choice in the matter We will always act so as to pursue our interest, even if it means harming others As a result, altruism is impossible

What is altruism?

It too is a psychological theory. It states: It is possible, at times, to put the interest of others before your own, even if it means bringing harm to yourself So we are not born selfish

Can you better explain this psychological egoism stuff? Sure, the Ring of Gyges story sums up its main points
