Presentation transcript:

CSE 1111 Week 3 Ethical Relativism Basically asserts that there are no standards or rules of behavior that can reasonably be applied at all times and in all places. So whether an action is moral must be answered by considering it relative to the time and culture in which it takes place. Criticism --- “whatever feels right to you is OK” seems headed for moral anarchy --- no right or wrong, only different.

CSE 1111 Week 3 Utilitarianism Is an example of a consequentialist theory, in that it attempts to determine whether an action is moral by examining the consequences of the action. Assume everyone’s end goal is to achieve happiness, which means to act in a way that results in the greatest benefit for all people. Criticism --- can lead to negative consequences that seem quite extreme.

CSE 1111 Week 3 Deontological theory Focuses on motivation and intent of an action in terms on how it reflects on the relations among people. Each person has intrinsic worth and deserves respect. “Do onto others …” Criticism --- all person may not be able to act as rational agents.

CSE 1111 Week 3 Applied ethics We have a legal system which enforces a set of rules. Not everyone agrees that what is legal is moral. Not everyone agrees that what is illegal is not moral.

CSE 1111 Week 3 Professional ethics Professional ethics is different from general ethics in that it must take into account: Relations between professionals & clients Relations between the profession & society Relations among professionals Relations between employers & employees Technical details of the profession
