“THE SWISS CHEESE THEORY”

The theory states that we are all a piece of Swiss Cheese. The holes in our cheese represent “NEEDS” that we must get met regularly.

“SWISS CHEESE NEEDS” physical These “needs” can be physical such as food, water, clothing, shelter, sleep, air, exercise, relaxation, etc…. social These “needs” can be social such as family, friendship, dating, belonging, touch, accepted, trusted, bonded, etc…. emotional These “needs” can be emotional such as competent, loved, liked, secure, admired, happiness, respect, successful, etc….

“SWISS CHEESE NEEDS” intellectual These “needs” can be intellectual such as knowledge, applied skills, technology, reading, research etc… school/career These “needs” can be school/career such as success, validation, future, interpersonal skills, resources, etc… environmental These “needs” can be environmental such as reusing, recycling, maintaining, cleaning, organizing, etc… spiritual These “needs” can be spiritual such as religion, meditation, attitude, purpose, beliefs, faith, etc…

Many teens don’t understand the “Swiss cheese Theory”. So, they get there needs met in unhealthy ways like:
