Urban Settlement Patterns sounds exciting, eh?

Urbanization def’n The process by which an area changes from being rural to urban (people move from countryside to cities in search of jobs, better education, more entertainment, etc.)

Multiplier Effect Cities grow because of the multiplier effect. Industries and businesses attract workers to the area. This increases the population and thus the demand for goods and services of all kinds. This, in turn, further increases the population and more industries and businesses are attracted to the area. The net result is that the entire city grows even larger.

4 Types of Urban Places: Manufacturing Centres: main purpose is the production of the consumer goods. (need available labour and transportation facilities). Examples: Hamilton, Windsor, Sarnia, Cambridge

Hamilton:

2. Service Centres (Census Metropolitan Areas) Offer a variety of goods and services to the surrounding area. (government buildings, churches, universities). Examples: Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Waterloo University of Toronto

3. Transportation Centres (port cities): Receive products from the surrounding area and ship it to other urban centres by train, boat, truck etc. Examples: Thunder Bay, Winnipeg, Montreal, Vancouver

4. Resource Centres Exist because of natural resources nearby. Examples: Sudbury (nickel) Timmins (mining gold, zinc, copper and forestry) and others such as Goderich, St. John’s (fishing) Whitehorse, Edmonton
