Workshop 2 Addition and Subtraction Presented by B & G

Learning Outcomes To reflect on the New Zealand Number Framework and Getting Started To observe and share Addition and Subtraction Strategy Teaching

Framework What strategy stage would you see these problems solved and how? 7 + ___ = 13 I have 293 Marbles and I win another 69 marbles. How many do I have now? 7 rows of 5 plants ? If you had 18 smarties on a cake and you get 2/6 of the cake. How many smarties would you get ?

Knowledge Teaching Share one knowledge activity that has been successful in your classroom Identify the knowledge and/or knowledge items being developed

Getting Started How do you plan for your addition and subtraction strategy teaching? What are the key organisational requirements for successful implementation? What were some key elements of a numeracy lesson that you identified from the modelling visit

Opening the Door... The Teaching Model

Addition and Subtraction Using your Addition and Subtraction books find an activity that you can use in your classroom Using the equipment available prepare and share a teaching session with the group (groups of 3 or 4) Identify knowledge needed and strategy being developed

Goals Daily lesson format being practised Modelling Book being used in strategy teaching Strategy teaching for addition and subtraction started Find a practise activity to share with colleagues Next visit You take the knowledge warm-up, teach one addition and subtraction strategy group, and inform us of the operation (mult/div, fract/dec) and strategy stage you wish to see demonstrated.
