A Christmas Carol Introduction

What do you usually do at Christmas? Decorating a Christmas tree? Singing Christmas carols? Sending Christmas cards?

Background information What happened in the past?

At the beginning of Queen Victoria’s reign… the celebration of Christmas was in decline. Industrial revolution Workers had little time to celebrate Christmas

Victorian England If you were poor or an out-of-work Londoner during this time, these were their options: Beg on the street Go to a workhouse Be thrown into a prison

Victorian England Workhouses were institutions where people were put to work in exchange for food and shelter. People in workhouses often: Had little or no heat Did not get nearly enough food Were severely overworked and even beaten

Victorian England As a young man, Charles Dickens witnessed a decline in the traditional celebration of Christmas in England. Because of the Industrial Revolution, many employers wouldn’t even give their employees Christmas Day off.

Victorian England A Christmas Carol, along with several other Christmas books by Dickens, helped revive the holiday customs. Some people even started calling Dickens “The Man Who Discovered Christmas.”

Author: Charles Dickens Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was born at Landport near Portsmouth.

Author: Charles Dickens When Charles was eleven years old, his father was sent to prison for debt. Charles was sent to live by himself and work in a warehouse where he pasted labels on bottles for six shillings a week.

Author: Charles Dickens After school, he went to work in a solicitor’s office, but the law was not his real calling. He therefore taught himself shorthand and was able to report parliamentary debates. From his reputation as a reporter he was asked to write. Dickens’ early books were often comic, but as he grew older he became more concerned with the injustices of British society.

Author: Charles Dickens Because Charles Dickens had experienced poverty as a child, he was very concerned about the poor. Thus, he raised money to help people in need by reading his stories like, “A Christmas Carol.”

Setting Like many of Dickens' novels, this one is set mainly in London some time in the middle of the 19th century.
