Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh Art Lesson Grade: 2 Activity: Arizona Starry Night Key Words: Movement Line Expressionism Supplies: Dark Blue Construction paper 9 x 12 Black construction paper to mat Scraps of black construction paper Oil pastels Scissors white glue Hair Spray Artist Blurb Hands On Art : Option 1: Arizona Starry Night Students will cut out cactus and other desert silhouettes from the black scrap construction paper. Option 2: Starry Night Students can make a hilly scene with houses influenced by the original Starry Night Art Guide Prep: Make copies of Artist Blurb Glue artist blurb on back of black construction paper for matting 1.Give each student a dark blue sheet of construction paper, scissors and some scrap pieces of black construction paper. 2.Let the students decide on which starry night they want to create 3.Pass out oil pastels in a variety of colors, but make sure to include, white, yellow and orange. 4.Have them draw some rolling hills about half way on their paper.

5. Use the oil pastels to create a moon and stars, then they can create the movement and swirly patterns in the sky. 6.Cut out different shapes from the black scrap paper that goes with your theme. Cactus, houses, tree, etc… 7.Emphasize the Foreground shapes will be large and set in front of the picture and smaller cutouts will be more in the background. 8.Use white glue to glue down shapes. 9.Go over some of the shapes with oil pastels to give subtle color effects. 10.Make sure name is written on the front. Finish and Display : Mat the finished art work on black construction paper. You can use 9 x 12 black and offset the art. Make sure name is displayed on front Display outside classroom on art board.
