Presentation transcript:

Baseball players throughout the major leagues wore the number 42 on Sunday in honor of Jackie Robinson, who broke the sport's color barrier on April 15, From left, Lester Strode, Derrek Lee and Cliff Floyd of the Cubs; the Reds' Ken Griffey Jr. and Jacque Jones of the Cubs.

Robinson, a four-letter athlete at U.C.L.A. and an Army lieutenant during World War II, came to the Brooklyn Dodgers after solid performance in the minors. He retired after the 1956 season and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1962.

Ceremonies were held at 10 major league parks, while events at five ballparks were postponed due to heavy rain.

More than 200 players, managers and coaches took part, including all of the St. Louis Cardinals and Milwaukee Brewers.

Every player on the Los Angeles Dodgers wore Robinson's number in their game against San Diego, and baseball legends Frank Robinson (on screen, left) and Hank Aaron were on hand to throw out the first pitch

Rachel Robinson, widow of Jackie Robinson, received an award from Commissioner Bud Selig for her work with the Jackie Robinson Foundation, which raises scholarship money for qualified minorities.

Derek Jeter, who normally wears No. 2, warming up before the Yankees' game against Oakland

Robinson's number was officially retired throughout baseball in Only one player wears it regularly: Yankees' reliever Mariano Rivera, who wore the number before it was retired.
