Jason Chen, Sten Sjoberg Ericsson Venue: IEEE m-07/047 - Call for Contributions on Project m System Description Document. Introduction This contribution addresses the VoIP capacity requirement as specified in ‎the SDD and proposes a method to use multiple-user unsolicited grant service (UGS) slots for VoIP services. UGS would normally be very inefficient for voice applications with Voice Activity Factors (VAF) of the order of 45-55% but this proposal utilizes the VAF to eliminate idle UGS slots by means of multiplexing more than one VoIP user to the same slot

Proposal We propose that a section on VoIP capacity improvement be added in the System Description Document (SDD). Additionally, we recommend that the multiple-user UGS slot proposal be included in that section of the SDD.

Multiple-User UGS Slot UL VoIP traffic characteristics –Low delay tolerance –Variable data rate –Certain level of error tolerance –MS vocoder output traffic unpredictable to BS scheduler BS most likely allocates UGS slots based on vocoder full rate requirement –Voice activity makes MS’s underutilize allocated radio resources Overloading: partial collision with Gausian-like interference –Introducing partial collision in the UGS space –Randomizing the interference to Gaussian-like to maintain demod/decoding optimal property –Utilizing voice activity and available power headroom

Overloading UGS Slot in PUSC Tile 12 freq-time grids per tile Length-12 Walsh code creates 12 code channels CDM pilot and data channels for a user : data grid : pilot grid symbol subcarrier time User 1 User 2 User 3 subchannel User 1 User 2 User 3 subchannel User x freq-time grids code data pilot

Proposed SDD Text [Section] VoIP Capacity Improvement [Subsection] Multiple-User UGS Slot A multiplexing scheme that allows more than one user to be allocated to one UGS slot shall be introduced to m. The multiplexing scheme enables UGS users to transmit on the uplink with partially overlapping frequency and time resources. Interference resulting from tile collisions is randomized to have Gaussian-like statistics in order to resemble the environment receivers usually are optimized for. The interference randomization is achieved by superimposing tiles with code channels.
