College Checklist CSU Application period Oct -Nov 2013 UC Application period November 2013 Private Colleges/Universities ,varies by school Current unofficial transcript (request in counseling office during before school/break/lunch/afterschool ) *Keep in mind it can take 7-14 business days for a transcript, plan accordingly Know your social security number (SSN) SAT Reasoning or ACT scores or date you will be taking the test (No later than December 2013) SAT Subject scores or date you will be taking the test (No later than December 2013) ACT Score or date you will be taking the test (No later than December 2013) Have a list of extracurricular activities with dates handy (sports, clubs, community service, part time employment, etc. ) Start applying to scholarships!! Important 12th Grade Deadlines: CSU/ UC Admission Status- check online. (December 2013 – March 2014) Log in to the website to look up admission decisions and do any updates on contact info. Both Systems will give you a specific login to their school, the login must be activated within a week after you were emailed the information. May 1st – Statement to Intent to Register (SIR) due. Before you graduate, do an official transcript request to notify the Registrar when and to what college you want your official transcript mailed to. Once admitted: If you attend a CSU campus, you will be required to take the ELM and EPT Placement exams, which you can start taking in January 2014. You may be exempt from these placement exams based on how you do on the additional questions you answered on the CSTs for the Early Assessment Program (EAP) or SAT/ACT scores. http://www.ets.org/csu/about If you attend a UC campus, you will be asked to take the Analytical Writing Placement Exam in May 2014. You may also be exempt from this exam SAT/ACT score in English/Writing or a 3 or better in the AP English Exam. http://www.ucop.edu/elwr/index.html

NCAA Clearinghouse If you plan to play sports for a college once you graduate, you must register with the NCAA clearinghouse and make sure you meet the requirements for the Division you want to play for. Division 1- 16 course Requirement 4 years of English 3 years of Mathematics (Algebra 1 or higher) 2 years of natural/physical science (1 year of lab) 1 year of additional English, mathematics or natural/physical science 2 years of Social Science 4 years of additional courses (from any area above, foreign language) There is a sliding scale for your GPA and SAT or ACT test score. Division 2- 16 course requirement 3 years of English 2 years of Mathematics (Algebra 1 or higher) 2 years of additional English, mathematics or natural/physical science 3 years of additional courses (from any area above, foreign language) Minimum GPA for Division 2 is a 2.00, min. SAT score is 820 or ACT sum score of 68. NCAA Eligibility Center’s website: www.ncaaclearinghouse.net

Vocational Military Vocational schools include: ITT, UTI, DeVry, Le Cordon Blue, FIDM, etc. Admissions Requirements: Apply 6 weeks before planned attendance date High School Diploma Math and English Placement Tests Military Requirements High School Diploma ASVAB – recommended score of 50 Some branches no longer accept any on line courses, please contact the recruiter Currently all branches of the military are giving preference to High School Seniors. If you wait until after you graduate you will be placed on a waiting list.

World of Work Prepare For the Job Hunt Are You Job Ready? Do you currently have: Picture ID Social Security Card Prepare a Resume Complete an application form Three references from non-relatives Knowledge about contacting Employers Knowledge about interviewing techniques Reliable transportation Participate in a job interview 10 Most Serious Problems of Young Workers Absent from work too frequently Has to be supervised too much of the time. Takes no initiative when something needs to be done. Isn’t very observant. Arrives late or leaves early too often. Doesn’t listen well. Doesn’t consider the consequences of decisions. Too much socializing with other workers or visitors. Can’t accept suggestions or criticism. Doesn’t seem to care about doing a job well.

Important 12th grade Deadlines Cont’d… Financial Aid 1st semester: Look up scholarships ( a good website, that students can go on now is www.fastweb.com ), ask for letters of recommendation (make sure to give the people you are asking a letter of rec. from plenty of time) Create your FAFSA Pin at www.pin.ed.gov (it will be the students and parents electronic signature on the FAFSA) Cal-Grant: in order to submit electronically, we will need the students social security number. www.calgrants.org CSS/Financial Aid Profile: certain private schools require it and there is a fee for each campus. https://profileonline.collegeboard.com Attend our Financial Aid Workshop 2nd semester: Continue to look up scholarships, ask for letters of recommendation (make sure to give the people you are asking a letter of rec. from plenty of time) Submit the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)- Jan. 1st- March 2nd www.fafsa.ed.gov Verify / Update the information on the Student Aid Report (SAR) If the college you are attending asks for further documentation, make sure to provide them in a timely manner.
