ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson deBono’s Thinking Hats Goals: Students will gain an understanding of the location of the continents and oceans. Students will identify physical characteristics and components of the world. Students will integrate technology into social studies. Objectives: Content/Knowledge: Students will gain knowledge of each continent. Students will learn the locations of the continents and the oceans. Process/Skills: Through the integration of technology students will process location of the continents and oceans. Students will be able to read and comprehend the basic of a globe or a map of the world. Values/Dispositions: The students will understand the value of the world.

ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson deBono’s Thinking Hats Rationale: It’s a Small World! allows students to discover and gain knowledge of each of the continents and the oceans! Each continent has something unique to offer and in class we will learn just that! It is important for students to grasp knowledge and memorize where these countries are. In our daily lives we often hear of other countries and it will be to our best interest to know about each country! Who knows…you may be traveling there next! Standards: State – Illinois Common Core or Learning Standards 17.B.1a Identify components of the Earth’s physical systems. 17.A.1a Identify physical characteristics of places, both local and global (e.g., locations, roads, regions, bodies of water). National – NCSS Themes People, Places, and Environments.

Objective

Using the three white hat delicious bookmarks, the students have many opportunities to engage and learn a great amount of information of the continents and oceans. The students will use each website to gain knowledge of the continents and oceans. While watching the YouTube video, students will have an opportunity to learn more through a different type of resource. While reading about the oceans and continents, the students will write at least two fascinating facts of each ocean and location of the oceans. Objective

Intuitive

Using the red hat delicious bookmark, the students will view lyrics and automatically hear a song. While in class, the students will listen to the song. Next, the class will learn the lyrics to the song. The students can focus on feelings that may help them memorize by instinct. After learning the lyrics, the students will participate and sing together in class. Intuitive

Positive/Strengths

Positive/Strengths Using the yellow hat delicious bookmark, the students are able to access two different quizzes on the oceans and continents. Using computers, the students will work on the quizzes and print their final results. The students will understand the value and benefit of knowing these important locations.

Negatives/Weaknesses

Using the black hat delicious bookmark, the students will have hands-on access to a smartboard activity. As a class, each student will have a chance to answer questions. The students will see that it is important to know where the locations of our continents and oceans are at in order to be successful. Negatives/Weaknesses

Creative

Creative Using the green hat delicious bookmark, students will select important words that have discussed in class or that they have viewed through online discovery. Using these words (at least 10), the students will access Tagxedo to create a word cloud. The students will select an object outline that correlates with our classroom topic as well as colors!

Thinking About Thinking

Using the blue hat delicious bookmarks, the students will explore the world. The students will view the world traveler airlines to experience each continent and view actual pictures from each continent. The students will write at least one paragraph about an action plan if they were to travel to their favorite continent. The students will view Google earth as a class. The students will locate each ocean as well as the continents as well.

ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson deBono’s Thinking Hats Visual Learning, Assessment, and Online Resources: Assessment: White Hat: Students will be assessed by the information they provide about the continents and oceans. Was the information factual? Did the students fully read the content? Red Hat: Students will be assessed by their amount of class participation while learning the continent and ocean song. Yellow Hat: The students will be assessed by their work of the online quizzes. The students will print off their completed work to turn in for review. Black Hat: Students will be assessed by their class participation and collaboration. Green Hat: The students will be assessed by their final product created on Tagxedo. Blue Hat: The students will be assessed by their travel action plan in a paragraph. Online Resources:
