I. Athens on the Rise A. The Persian Wars (490 B.C.-479 B.C.): Darius the Great, leader of the Persian Empire, goes to war against Athens.

I. Athens on the Rise B. Great Battles of the Persian Wars 1. Battle of Marathon (490 B.C.): Darius’ troops land 26 miles north of Athens. Athenians attack and win. 2.
