I. Athens on the Rise A. The Persian Wars (490 B.C.-479 B.C.): Darius the Great, leader of the Persian Empire, goes to war against Athens.

I. Athens on the Rise B. Great Battles of the Persian Wars 1. Battle of Marathon (490 B.C.): Darius’ troops land 26 miles north of Athens. Athenians attack and win. 2. Battle of Thermopylae (480 B.C.): Darius’ son Xerxes launches another invasion of Greece. Sparta defends Greece. 300 Spartans vs. 150,000 Persians. Persians win. 3. Battle of Salamis (480 B.C.): Athens is burned, but the Athenian navy defeats the Persians!
