LEARN TO VOLLEY! 1 ST Grade Lesson Plan To be taught in gymnasium or open space 20 minute lesson

NASPE CONTENT STANDARDS Standard 1: Students demonstrate competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities. Standard 2: Students exhibit responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity setting.

INDIANA PHYSICAL EDUCATION ACADEMIC STANDARD Perform manipulative skills with developmentally appropriate challenges to reinforce learning fundamental movements.

INTASC STANDARD Standard 6: Assessment: The teacher understands and uses multiple methods of assessment to engage learners in their own growth, to monitor learner progress, and to guide the teacher’s and learner’s decision making. Description: This assignment is a lesson plan created to teach a manipulative skill to an elementary student and documents the steps taken to teach the skill and the methods of teaching and using assessment to achieve the mastery of the manipulative skill. Rationale: To document my understanding of Standard 6, Assessment, I have selected to include my physical education lesson plan because it demonstrates my ability to create a lesson plan with the proper standards included and to then use assessment to help students achieve the mastery of the manipulative skill

STUDENT OBJECTIVES Students will demonstrate eye hand coordination while successfully volleying multiple times with themselves and a partner.

EQUIPMENT Balloons Beach volleyball or foam ball

PREPARATION Open area with plenty of space. Make sure equipment is properly functioning. ◦Balloons and beach volley balls blown up.

INTRODUCTORY FITNESS ACTIVITY Warm Up Students will need to warm up through jogging a lap around the gym. Students will also complete arm and leg stretching to warm up their muscles in preparation of learning to volley. Teacher will demonstrate how to volley to show students the proper form.

LESSON ACTIVITY Volley as individuals. ◦Students will toss the ball to themselves and volley and catch it. Repeat. ◦Concentrate on keeping the ball centered on their arms and watching the ball with their eyes. ◦The students will begin using a balloon.

Lesson Activity Cont. Volley with a partner. ◦Students will then take turns tossing the ball to their partner who will volley it back to them to be caught by the partner who tossed it. ◦When students are comfortable they will switch to the beach volleyball or foam ball which will increase the difficulty slightly. ◦Then students will volley the ball back and forth continuing to master the skill.

CLOSING ACTIVITY Students will stretch their arms and legs. Will finish with a walking lap around the gym. Students are responsible for returning the equipment to their designated area.

ASSESSMENT ACTIVITY Beginning PlayerHigh School StarCollegiate PlayerOlympian Eyes focused on ball Eyes do not focus on ball Does not watch ball with every contact Regularly watches ball as it is contacted Watches ball during contact and continues watching it after contact Forearms consistently contact ball Sometimes ball contacts forearms between wrist and elbow Forearms hit ball in clumsy manner Forearms regularly contact ball with soft touch Forearms always consistently contact ball with exceptional touch Legs bent before contact Legs kept extended, no bend Limited leg bendLegs bent in adequate fashion Player moves around the floor with legs consistently bent Legs extend during contact Legs always straight, therefore not able to extend Very limited extension Good leg extension at time of contact Legs always extend fully during contact in correct, timely manner to impart good power

ACCOMODATIONS To increase the difficulty of the activity, students could be asked to practice volleying over a net. Preparations would need to be made to have one available. They could also move up to an actual volleyball. To decrease difficulty students could stick to the balloon. They could also practice volleying to themselves against the wall.

SAFETY CONCERNS Improper use of equipment. ◦Students will be made aware of consequences of improper use of equipment. Close supervision to watch all students ◦‘Back to wall’ or ‘move around’ technique. Correct partner pairing.

THANK YOU! Justine
