Before setting up your Wiki, you will want to know what it is your posting. What information or instruction do you want to share? Once you have decided on the information you will be posting, you want to come up with a creative name. Your Wiki name will be what people first look at, then decide if they want to browse your Wiki, or not. When you are ready, it is time to find the website and register. Once you get to your home page, you will begin introducing your Wiki. Next, the play begins! Teach: Inform: Collaborate: Share your classroom: What other reasons can you think of to use a Wiki for? BACK TO HOMEPAGE Animation: No Text/Audio Narration: When starting a Wiki, you usually have something in mind you want to share with others. Is your purpose to teach a lesson? Maybe you want to share information, as well as receive information or get feedback from your information. Some work places set up a Wiki to collaborate in a variety of ways. Teachers often post Wiki’s giving details and updates what their school or classroom is doing. There are a variety of reasons people set up Wiki’s. Do you have other suggestions why people may set up a Wiki? Here is a list of Wiki sites to review to get a better idea of the purposes some people set up Wikis. Graphics: Added graphics to give example. Audio: Select from icon. Naming your Wiki A name is not just a “Name” for a Wiki. Example A: Addictions Example B: Drugs_______________________________________________________ BACK TO HOMEPAGE Animation: No Text/Audio Narration: When creating your Wiki name, you will want to think of a name that will give on lookers a good idea of what your Wiki is about. What will capture someone’s interest to read your Wiki? This can be looked at the thesis of your Wiki, or the main topic. What example, A or B do you think best defines what the graphics are about? In example B, drugs is the name of the Wiki. Drugs are a huge focus when it comes to addictions, but is this what most of the graphics represent? In example A, addictions gives a broader range of what the Wiki is mostly about. Not just drugs, but a variety of addictions. Your name should give the over view what your Wiki is about. Setting up your Wiki Register at: Filling in the required information is fast and easy! Ready to start? Settings: Public Protected Private Profile: You can do this later. BACK TO HOMEPAGE Animation: No Text/Audio Narration: Now that you have decided on what your Wiki will be about and have a name for it, you are ready to start your Wiki. First you go into this website and set up your account. After filling out the registration, you will be asked if you are ready to start your Wiki. Do you want to have your Wiki open to the public? This would mean that anyone can see it, and anyone can edit it, or add to it. Protected is where the public can see your Wiki, though can not edit it. Private is where only invited people can view your Wiki. You will be prompted to pick one! There is a place you can post your profile, though you can go in and set up your Wiki before getting to this, your choice. This is your home page. From here is where you introduce your Wiki, and place whatever else you want to on it. A great way to get ideas on looks of Wiki’s, is to look at other Wiki’s. Here is a web link to view. Take a look at how other homepages are set up. Remember, you can always go in and make changes later! Notes: Heading: Arial – font size-28 Body: Arial – font size 14 Graphic: Addictions from Google Images. Link to homepage. Practice Exercise Now that you have viewed some examples of Wiki homepages, how about doing a practice write? Try a short introduction for your homepage right here! Learners introduction: There are many kinds of addictions. Addictions cause many problems in lives. It effects immediate family, as well as extended family. There are many causes that lead to addiction, the biggest factor, they are addictions. What are addictions? What kinds of addictions are there? What causes addictions? What are the major problems associated with addictions? Feedback: Great job! You have opened your Wiki with an over view of addictions. Since your Wiki is about addictions in general, this is a great introduction. I like your graphic, it outlines different types of addictions. I’m not sure the placement of it suits the eyes, you may want to play around with it a little more. I like your open ended questions at the end. It leaves the reader asking themselves the questions. BACK TO HOMEPAGE Animation: No Text/Audio Narration: Once your Wiki is started, to make any changes you click on the edit button. The edit button is placed at the top right of your Wiki homepage. This is where the real design takes place. At the top of the edit screen will be selections you can choose from. The graphic you see here is the Widget tool, these are tools that help you embed many things into your Wiki, for example: table of contents, references, videos, graphics and much more! The link section lets you link to other places in your Wiki. The file link uploads files. The tables selection lets you make tables and the text tool looks like a word text bar, used for font style size and placement of text. Notes: Heading: Arial – font size-28 Body: Arial – font size 14 Insert practice website. Dialogue text. Link to homepage. Collaborative Activity Linking is an important part of a Wiki. You don’t want everything posted on your homepage, links lets you segment your Wiki into chunks. Go to this website and give it a try! “First go to edit, then, select link, where it says link text up on the tool bar. You will be prompt to put in the name you want to make a link for.” “What will you put?” “ Addictions.” “O.k., good choice.” “You now have the choice where to put it. I would say page 2.” “Great job! Now you have a link to your Wiki! Do you see the link on the left of the screen? People can now select that link to go to this new page. It is that easy! Continue to go in and out, making changes with your Wiki. It takes time to understand how it all works, though you are now well on your way!
