LESSON 16 ENGINE OPERATION PREPARATIONS FOR STARTING B&W 50 98 MC

AIR SYSTEMS Drain water from: 1. The starting air system. 2. Control air system at the receivers. Pressurise the air system. Check that the exhaust valves are closed.

Start the lube oil pumps for: 1. Engine 2. Camshaft 3. Turbochargers LUBE OIL SYSTEM Start the lube oil pumps for: 1. Engine 2. Camshaft 3. Turbochargers

Preferable temperature is 50°C. Start the cooling water pumps. COOLING WATER SYSTEM Do not start the engine if the jacket cooling water temperature is below 20°C. Preferable temperature is 50°C. Start the cooling water pumps. Check the pressures.

SLOW TURNING OF THE ENGINE REASONS: 1. To prevent damage caused by fluid in a cylinder. 2. To check reversing mechanism.

SLOW-TURNING THE ENGINE (Cont...) 1. WITH SPECIAL-SLOW TURNING DEVICE 2. WITH TURNING GEAR 2.1 Open the indicator valves 2.2 Lift the locking plate of the main starting valve to the service position. 2.3 Give reversing order. 2.4 Turn the engine with the reversing gear. 2.5 Close the indicator valves. 2.6 Disengage the turning gear.

FUEL OIL SYSTEM START: 1. Fuel oil supply pump. 2. Circulating pump.

CHECKING THE FUEL REGULATING GEAR Close the shut off valve of the starting air distributor to prevent the engine from turning. Switch over to control console (engine side). Increase fuel pump index by regulating handwheel. Switch back to NORMAL control. Open the shut off valve of the starting air distributor.

MISCELLANEOUS Lubricate the bearings and rod connections. Switch on the lectrical equipment in the control console. Set switch for auxiliary blowers in AUTO position. START THE ENGINE
