Media Centers: Stepping into the future using Web 2.0 to enhance student learning Presented by Tonya Grant Fall 2011

The Media Center The Media center is a classroom with teacher-librarians. No longer just a book center. Provide new and innovative ways to learn.

Roles of a Media Specialist No longer just book people. Prepare students for the future. Integrate Web 2.0 resources into literacy lessons that support the curriculum. Collaborate More

Importance of Collaboration Key to a successful library. Use technology as a tool for collaboration with teachers. “Teacher-librarians are instructional partners that help students and staff master traditional and digital information skills”(Harris, 2007).

Why Use Technology in the Media Center? Generation of techno-savvy kids Interactive and fun Encourages students to want to figure out things which leads to learning more. “Technology will empower individual students to master course material at their own pace” (McCain, 2010). Safety Issues

Benefits of Using Web 2.0 Tools to Enhance Student Learning Supports the mission of a school library program, “to instill a love of learning in all students and ensure equitable access to information” (AASL, 2009 p.7). Gather, learn, and share information Critical thinkers Skillful researchers Communicate globally with others Possibilities are endless (graphic organizers, collaborative projects, etc)

Web 2.0 Tools Way to share information using the Internet Computer Free applications or low cost Set up an account Examples - Wikis, Wordles, Bubbl.us, Fotobabble, Wallwisher, Glogster, Skype, and more.

Wordle A “word cloud” Graphic representation of words Use different fonts, layouts, and color schemes Retype words 2 or 3 more times than others to make them stand out more. Use a ~ between words to group words together (ex. We~The~People) Free to use

Ideas for Using Wordle Introduce a new subject (Tell me about...) Student names Spelling words Characters in a book Information review Guess a topic or book

More Ideas for Using Wordles Reflections on a topic, book, picture, poetry, etc. Famous speeches Use for school work, not homework Add to a wikispace

Wordle – Guess the book

Bubbl.Us It is “a simple and free web application that lets us brainstorm online.” Way to graphically organize your ideas. Color coded shapes Free, but sign up for an account. Kid friendly

Ideas for using Bubbl.us Create word webs (Brainstorming) Use as a note taking strategy Create timelines Classify or show relationships (ex. Living vs. Nonliving Things) Use to illustrate a scientific process (ex. Water Cycle) Create a family tree Add to wikispaces

Wikispaces Webpage That You Can Edit Easy to Create Students Can Collaborate on Projects Free Basic Wiki or Upgrade for a Cost Teachers need a password and login to share with students. hers hers
