Element Baby Book Project Procedure and Example

Introduction In this project you will adopt an element from the periodic table. As the proud new parent of your element, you will create a baby book to remember each stage of your element’s life. This counts as a test grade and a lab grade. Pay special attention to the required details so you don’t loose points. You may create your book on the computer, but it is not necessary..

How and When? When: Introduction 11/30 Class work – 11/30 – 12/4 and 12/7(computer lab & classroom) Element Square due Date: Thursday 12/3 Final Project due Date: beginning of class Tuesday 12/8 must be PRINTED! Presentations: 12/8 and 12/9 Time line suggestions: Research, cover page, Element square – 11/30-12/1 Page 1 and start page 2– 12/2 Page 3 and Page 5 – 12/3 Page 6 – 12/4 Page 7 & final touches – over the weekend and 12/7

Process Use the resources listed on your handout or google the element name. avoid Wikipedia During this process remember to include: Color Neatness Check spelling and grammar Fill the pages Be creative!!!

Cover Page 3pts. Name of element Picture of the element (in everyday use) Your name and period Decorative cover

Birth Certificate Paragraph and Info Sheet 35pts Birth Certificate Paragraph and Info Sheet 35pts. (15 for info, 20 for paragraph) (pg1 and info sheet) Name (name of the element) Gold Nickname (symbol) Au Birth Date (date element discovered) Jan 24, 1848 Birth Weight (atomic Mass) 196.96655 amu Birth Height (atomic number) 79 Race (type of element- metal, non-metal, metalloid) metal Doctor (discoverer) James W. Marshall Gender (state of matter at room temperature) solid Place of birth (country of discovery) California Personality (boiling point & melting point) 5,162 F/1,947.7 F Signature of Parent (that’s you!) Make it look professional (border, seal of approval, etc...)

Birth Certificate examples (2 pts Birth Certificate examples (2 pts.) (Pg 2) Find a style you like and copy it with your elements info. (google images) or type it in yourself to a word document. Make sure you have the info on my example!

BIRTH CERTIFICATE This is to certify that Gloria GOLD Birth Weight : 196.96655 amu Birth Height: 79 Race: Metal Gender: Solid Nickname: Au Personality: Boiling Point 5162F, Melting Point 1947.7C Was born in the year of 1848 in the country of USA (California). Baby Picture 10 pts. (Pg 3) Create or cut-out a picture of a baby Make sure your baby also has a body! The baby needs to have a drawing of your element’s atomic structure on their shirt (use your handout for help) Be sure to label your element and list its protons, neutrons & electrons in the correct amounts.

Gold Protons 3 Neutrons 4 Electrons 3

Look at Miss Bremer’s example for page 4 (7 pts, one in baby book) **You should have this for your baby book and your individual element for the wall! **

Family Tree 15 pts. (Pg 5) Create a family tree to place the following information. Family name (name of the group it belongs to alkali metals, halogens, etc.) Brothers and sisters(names of the group members)

Family Tree examples

The Alkali Metal Family, Group I Copper Silver Roentgenium Address: 11 Marshall Way Wayne, NJ 07470 Gold

Pg. 6 (10 pts.)

When I Grow Up 10pts. (Pg 7) In a paragraph of 8 sentences or more, explain the following: Career choice ( what is your element going to be used for) A picture of the career (use a different picture then the one used for the cover) Explain it in the 1st person (writing about themselves)

The Story of Me (Gold) When I grow up I want to be used in an engagement ring. I live in Spain now and I am waiting for the scientists to mine me and bring me to Europe where I will be put to use as wedding rings, Olympic medals, Oscars, Grammys, money as well as other things. In the past, Gold was used to decorate tombs and temples as well as decorative objects. Now jewelry, coins and the electronic business need my mineral more. Gold is malleable, and conducts electricity and heat easily. The government still uses me in currency, and I can be found in lots of jewelry. I hope to go to Kay Jewelers and be used in one of their very expensive diamond rings some day.

The Story of Me For a baby, I’m actually really old The Story of Me For a baby, I’m actually really old. I’ve actually been around almost since the Big Bang. You can usually find baby elements like me paired up in a compound, because I’m highly reactive. I’m reactive because I love to share my single electron and become a cation. I’m a giver, that’s what I do! I’m an old softie, so soft that you could cut me with a knife, but please don’t do that because I oxidize quickly. You can usually find me around the rocks (in the Earth’s crust) or near the oceans. Babies like me don’t come along every day, because I’m only the 25th most abundant element. I am really popular though, because of my usefulness in the medical field, batteries used in electronics, and as a lubricant for manufacturing!

Presentation (2 pts.) You will be presenting your baby book to the class

Creativity (3 pts) REMEMBER TO COMPLETE ALL REQUIREMENTS! Be Creative! Be Neat! Use Color! Punctuation, capitalization, spelling, and grammar must be accurate! Do your Personal Best!

HAVE FUN WITH IT!
