The Plant Parts Song by Mark Spann, 5 th Grade teacher Clark-Vitt School, Union, Missouri To the tune of the “Beverly Hillbillies” theme. The link to the song:

I’m gonna tell you all a story about what goes on in leaves

It’s good for all the plants and it’s great for you and me!

All they need is water, CO 2 and lots of sun,

Then they make their own food and they give us oxygen!

Photosynthesis, that is…. Photosynthesis!

The xylem and the phloem are the vessels for the plant,

They act just like blood vessels in your uncle or your aunt.

The xylem carries good stuff from the roots up to the leaves,

The phloem flows the other way and dead phloem makes tree bark!

Sorry about that, nothing rhymed with “leaves…” “here come the roots…”

The roots soak up the nutrients and water in the ground

They keep the plant well-anchored when the rain is pouring down,

They store the extra sugars and the starches from the leaves,

Some roots are quite delicious,

But don’t try eating trees!

Hard to chew….. …..lots of splinters …y’all come back now!
