Before 1995 it has been dormant for over 300 years. Haiti (Earthquake) 2 Sentence Summary of the case study: The earthquake was caused by the north American plate sliding past the Caribbean plate at a conservative plate margin. Both plates move in the same direction, but one moves faster than the other. The pressure that was built up because of the friction between the 2 plates was eventually released causing a magnitude 7 earthquake on the ritcher scale with an epicentre 16 miles west of port u prince and a shallow focus of 5 miles. Photo: PLCs (PLaCe facts): The earthquake struck at 16:43(4:53pm) local time on Tuesday 12 January ,000 people were killed and 1 million people were made homeless. 3 million people were affected by the earthquake.

Christchurch (Earthquake) 2 Sentence Summary of the case study: The February 2011 Christ church earthquake was a powerful natural event that severely damaged new Zealand's second largest city and killing 185 people in one of the nations deadliest peacetime disasters. Photo: PLCs (PLaCe facts): The earthquake caused widespread damage across Christchurch especially in the central city and eastern subhurbs,with damage exacerbated by buildings and infrastructure already being weakened by 4 September 2010 earthquake and its aftershocks. Hurricane Katrina/Sandy 2 Sentence Summary of the case study: Sandy began as a tropical wave in the Caribbean on Oct. 19 It quickly developed, becoming a tropical depression and then a tropical storm in just six hours. The total damage is expected to be in the billions.

Areas were left without water, food and electricity. The UN suggest that nearly 200,000 people died.

Drought in Ethiopia (Sahel) 2 Sentence Summary of the case study: The Sahel region of Africa has been suffering from drought on a regular basis since the early 1980s. The area naturally experiences alternating wet and dry seasons. If the rains fail it can cause drought. Photo: PLCs (PLaCe facts): The Sahel stretches for 500km from Senegal Mauritania on the west coast to Sudan and Ethiopia on the east. The region covers 1/5 th of Africa.
