How can tourism effect the environment?

Africa Europe Asia We want the tourists to come and spend their money but we don’t want them to damage our home

… good for the environment and fair for the local people.

What is ecotourism? Why do you think is ecotourism becoming so popular? What sustainable features will your eco-resort have? Make notes from the next slides. They are displayed around the room too..

Furniture from local materials – How is this sustainable?

Features of an eco-resort. Solar panels - How is this sustainable?

Wind power – How is this sustainable?

The reeds use your poo for fertilizer (food) and their roots clean your pee so nice clean water comes out the end of the system.

Water wells – How is this sustainable?

Rainwater harvesting – How is this sustainable?

Use the skills of local builders and local materials – How is this sustainable?

Transport from local materials – How is this sustainable?

Growing food in the resort grounds – How is this sustainable?

Bee keeping for honey in the resort grounds – How is this sustainable?

This is an excellent answer. It explains what your resort does and explains why that is sustainable very clearly. The magic word is My eco-resort is sustainable because I will use solar power for everything such as lights and refrigeration, so I will not use electricity from a power station so I will reduce carbon emissions so not be contributing to greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, so I will be doing my best to reduce global warming so helping to slow down climate change. so

Todays aim You are going to create a double page spread telling me all about your eco tourist resort. To do well you need to do two things: Describe clearly and in detail Explain how it is sustainable (environmentally friendly)

Eco Resort Basic State some facts about the area e.g. species you can find or the climate Describes some features of your resort that may be eco friendly e.g. local people employed Some attempt to explain at least one way that the resort is eco friendly Good Clear detailed description of the area your resort is in with key terms Detailed description of at least 4 features of your resort e.g. activities or food Explanation of why the features of your resort are sustainable / eco friendly. Mention of how your resort helps local people Images used that help to describe / explain your point

Quick Check Task – Evaluate your neighbours work – is their eco-resort sustainable. Your design is good for the environment because …….. Your design is fair for local people because …….. Your design would be even better if ……….
