Question  Does the weight of a coin affect the amount of times it will land on heads if it is flipped off of the thumb and the index finger?  Using United States coins.

Claims  Ho: The prop. of heads is the same for Dimes, Nickels, Pennies, Quarters. Pp=Pd=Pn=Pq=.50  Ha: The prop. Of heads is not the same for Dimes, Nickels, Pennies, Quarters. Pp≠Pd≠Pn≠Pq=.50

Procedure  Obtain a sample of each type of US coin ( Quarter, Dime, Nickel, Penny.  Flip each coin 25 times and record the outcome either heads or tails  Use data to complete a X² GOF – test use answers to write conclusion and make inferences.

Data HeadsTails Quarter Dimes Nickels Pennys

Weights Quarter 5.7 grams Dime 2.3 grams Nickel 5 grams Penny 2.5 grams

Penny

Quarter

Dimes

Nickel

Equation  We use the X² GOF test in the TI 84 calculator  P=.0635  X²= 7.28

Comments/ Concerns  Strengths: All coins were U.S coins and weights given were based on government estimates of each coins.  Weaknesses: Each person’s finger strength is different causing amounts of flips in the air to be different.

Conclusion  At the.05 level with a p-value of.0653 we fail to reject our claim that the number of heads received when flipping each coin (quarter, dime, nickel, penny) will be the same. This means that the weight or size of each coin does not effect the outcome of the flip.
