OBJECTIVES AND MOTIVATIONS The course aims to examine the needs current European labour markets are facing. As technological developments are becoming more rapid, also jobs change more quickly than before. The EU on one hand has to come to terms with changes in the world economy and on the other hand needs to reinforce the European social models, which are committed to social protection, social cohesion and solidarity. The course will provide the basic tools to address the following economic issues. The benchmark model: a competitive labor market. Non competitive labor markets: some case studies. The current debate on the EU labor market: the role of institutions and employment protection legislations. Flexicurity: some drawing lessons from the Danish model. Labour market policies in the EU The wage gap among workers that differ in their education. The rate of return to schooling. Schooling as a signal. On the job training and life long learning.
