What is bonfire night?

Key words Treason- the crime of betraying one's country, especially by attempting to kill the king or queen Catholic- a Christian group who are led by the Pope Protestant- a Christian group who are not under the Pope’s authority

Catholic v Protestant SO…What’s the difference? Protestant Catholic England had been a Catholic country until Henry VIII decided to break away from Catholicism and the power of the Pope. He set up the Church of England- a protestant church- with himself at the head. However, it wasn’t so simple! Throughout the C16th and 17th centuries, English monarchs went back and forth between making England Catholic and Protestant. SO…What’s the difference? Protestant Catholic Read the sheet Catholic v Protestant

Catholic v Protestant Protestant Catholic In a paragraph- What is the difference between Catholicism and Protestantism? Catholics and Protestants are both C_______________, however they have many differences. One difference is… Another difference is… Challenge: Try improving your writing by explaining and analysing “Protestants believe…. because…” “This is important because…” “I think the most important difference is….because…”

Guy Fawkes: History Mystery LO: analyse historical sources to decide whether the Gunpowder plotters were framed

The conspiracy theory Some people do not agree with the traditional story of the gunpowder plot. Instead they believe that the government knew about the plot and even encouraged it. Some historians think that James I and Robert Cecil hatched the plot themselves and framed the Catholics. Let’s investigate….Did Cecil plan the plot make the Catholics even more unpopular?

When looking at the evidence Your task In today’s lesson you are going to look at various pieces of evidence and reach a judgement to if the Gunpowder plotters were framed or not. In groups you will look at the evidence and the arguments and discuss if the plotters and Guy Fawkes were framed. When looking at the evidence Make your Point clearly and Provide Evidence and Examples using the handouts.

SUSPICIOUS Good detectives are… CECIL Can you find any evidence of a connection between the plot and Cecil? Has Cecil tried to hide anything? Did Cecil stop people from talking? Did he know details of the plot before it happened? SUSPICIOUS MOTIVE Why would Cecil set up Catholic plotters and only catch them at the last minute? Can you think of any reason why the Catholics would want to plan a plot against the king? RELIABILITY Which evidence is the most trustworthy? Which is the least trustworthy?

guilty of planning it all themselves You will work in a group to analyse the evidence and decide whether the plotters were: guilty of planning it all themselves Or b) set up by someone to make Catholics look bad

Debate We believe that the plotters were guilty of planning it all themselves / set up by a Protestant to make Catholics look bad The strongest piece of evidence to suggest this is… This proves our point because… There are several other pieces of evidence also such as…

Assessment Question: Were the Catholics Framed Assessment Question: Were the Catholics Framed? LO: to plan a answer using historical sources

Peer Assessment Success Criteria -Use a range of sources/evidence (3+ ideally for each section) -Explain each piece of evidence (“this shows that….) -Say why some evidence is important (“This is important because…) -Discuss the reliability of evidence (“This source is un/reliable because…” -Write a conclusion which argues their opinion and why they think this -Provide a balanced argument -Spelling, Punctuation, Grammar Read and proof read, circling spelling etc Comment: One thing you did well was… EBI: (even better if)

Plenary Were they or weren't they framed? Which piece of evidence swings it for you? Explain. Framed Not framed

Video clips http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/people/guy_fawkes#p00kvk4j James I= 1603 Under Elizabeth I the the Catholics had been persecuted- had to say mass in secret James I brought new hope- his wife was catholic and he had relaxed persecution of catholics However, some of his advisors put him under pressure to please puritans etc, started persecutions etc Discontent grew- 2 catholic plots against James had already been thwarted THE PLOT 5 men wanted to blow up parliament on its opening on Nov 5 1605: replace him with his daughter, thereby returning it to catholic Rented a cellar below the house of lords and began stockpiling it with gunpowder BUT as the plot neared fruition, the brother in law of one of the plotters got a letter warning him to stay away from the house of lords/opening of parliament (Monteagle) Guy Fawkes was arrest 4th november- tortured for 2 days in tower of london- finally confessed, but by then the others had escaped – others ended up having a final stand/shoot out at a manor house somewhere out of london- survivors taken back to london 8 ppl, including Fawkes, were hanged, drawn and quatered
