Club Officer Training & Toastmasters Leadership Institute October 18, 2015 Carolyn Kaldy, DTM & Lorraine Wheatley ACB, ALB 1313I

Purpose: 2 nd Round of Training: WHY ? When club officers are well-trained to perform their duties, club members are better served. This makes the member experience more positive, which leads to a quality club experience and increased member retention. Goal : If you want Toastmasters to attend your district’s training, you have to provide a convenient, quality product that provides value to participants - WIIFM

Second Round of Training for DCP points if taken within Dec 1 – Feb 29 TI rules; no flexibility  START EARLY; HAVE MORE THAN ONE Advertise time, place, location of your training at least six weeks prior to contest date on D42tm.org calendar Don’t rely only on mass s or “it’s on the website” For quality training, Club Officer training needs to be minimum 3 hours. Please coordinate: Try not to overlap with other training in the vicinity 2 nd Round of Training: WHEN ?

Ask around for low cost venues. Suggestions: Corporate board rooms, libraries, community halls, churches, etc. Ask if members have a membership to an association that may have space or offer a discount to non-profits e.g. condominiums, legions, community halls etc. Cost: district funds can not be used for food; If wish to have food; charge a small fee for purchased food or have potluck 2 nd Round of Training: WHERE ?

Training Organizer:  yes, it can be you !  HPL project – ensure a team in place to honour the HPL process Remember the Audience – Put on a Great Show – WIIFM 2 nd Round of Training: WHO ?

2 nd Round of Training: WHAT ? Area Directors - ask during club visits what training would help Division Directors - while reading the club visits – identify themes of issues e.g. missing club success plans, team conflicts Ask what Toastmaster members have expertise that can be shared e.g. conflict resolution, planning & organizing, listening, time management, facilitation and other leadership skills. How about a workshop on mentoring. Make a day of it: Why just for officers ? How about all Toastmasters. Consider sessions on basic toastmasters information such as answering tabletopics, networking, judges training, Road to DTM, etc. Have a keynote speaker

2 nd Round of Training: WHAT ? TI Materials: PERSONALIZE THESE FOR YOUR AUDIENCE  Building on Achievement for Continued Success (Item 1333) This is a great time to reflect on how club climate is –strengths & weaknesses  Club Officer Role Breakouts (Item B-H) Time to share issues; create/revise your Club Success Plan  Leading the Club to Success (Item 1313I) This helps with creation/revision of your Club Success Plan (SMART)  Building a Healthy Team (Item 1331) Teams have formed – what stage? – storming or norming or performing?  Enhancing Evaluations (Item 1332) We all need evaluation techniques in day to day life – great place to enhance this skill

CHECKLIST Select Training Chair Determine time and place up Preliminary “save the date” on D42 calendar Prepare budget and schedule of topics “WIIFM” Research what topics / presenters available Invite quality energetic presenters Formal advertising with schedule; details on D42 calendar; word of mouth Have sign-in forms of club officers being trained Have evaluation feedback forms; scan to share for next training Thank you cards for those who helped Ensure you submit the names of officers trained to Ken Tanner Lastly, reflect on the training, “WIIFM”, did they leave with a plan ? 2 nd Round of Training: HOW ?
