All People Have a Culture Objective: To be able to define culture, its purpose, and to identify various pieces of culture MJS 7 th Grade Social Studies

MEETING BASIC NEEDS  All people have the same basic needs, food, clothing and shelter  Different groups of people meet their basic needs differently, and that special way of life that is developed is called their culture.  A culture is a group of people’s special way of life developed to fulfill their basic needs

MEETING BASIC NEEDS CONTINUED  All people have the same needs, but each group meets their needs differently depending on their customs.  Customs are social habits or ways of living in a group.

LIVING AND WORKING TOGETHER  The ways people develop to live and work together form another part of their culture.  Society – a group of people bound together by the same culture  All over the world people are organized into groups, the main one being the family.

VALUES AND CULTURE  Values – the beliefs, or ideals, that guide the way people in a society live.  A culture’s values reflect what its people feel is important.  Values affect how people are governed.  Government – the established form of ruling  Religion is part of a culture’s values.  Religion is a common belief in a god or gods as well as a common way to worship them.

THE LEGACY OF DIFFERENT CULTURES  Legacy – the gifts a civilization has received and the gifts it has given  What lasting effect has the culture had on the world? How will it be remembered?  Many times societies build upon the legacies of past societies.

THE LEGACY OF DIFFERENT CULTURES  List a gift your culture has given to our modern world.  Has this legacy evolved over time? Did it come from someone else? Has it changed since your culture presented it?  Examples:  Japan’s White Day (Valentine’s Day for guys).  Lacrosse (aka Stickball from North American Indian)
