+ Today’s Discussion Would you allow a discommodity to hinder you from being a leader?

+ Introduction Temple Grandin lives with autism, yet is a leader in her own right. At a young age, she discovered her talent in science field, and dedicates her time and effort into it. However, due to her autism, she was not able to have a good relationship with other people. Then she discovered that animals could replace social interactions with humans— specifically horses and cattle. As a graduate student at Arizona State University, she conducted research about cattle behavior. Even though the time period she lived in was not acceptant towards women in the cattle industry, she was not discouraged. She identified her strengths, and acquired a leadership position.

+ The Question Would you allow a disability to hinder you from being a leader? No, I would not let a disability hinder me from being a leader. Temple Grandin was very inspirational for me. She made me want to do more to be a better leader by taking the initiative and being persistent in everything that I do.

+ Brittany’s Personal Obstacle When I was younger, I did well in math but as I got older and the math became more complicated, I lost my comprehension of the subject to the point where now I am completely lost. I failed College Algebra my first semester of college. I didn’t give up though. I am currently taking the class again and as of my midterm grades, I am passing math. This makes me very proud considering that I didn’t give up. I believed in myself and along with the help of others, I was able to move on and do better.

+ Persistence She never gave up on her dreams. She wanted to work in the slaughterhouse for cattle but after her summer internship, the man that worked at the gate wouldn’t let her in. Instead of just being discouraged and giving up, she took notice of the clothes that the men that were allowed in, wore and how their cars looked; Temple went on to create this image in herself by dressing like the men, trading in her car for a truck, and getting all dirty like the field men. This is how she made her way in passed the guard.

+ A Continuation She studied the animals by drawing sketches and taking notes in a book, as well as, simply observing them. Even when the men put bull’s testicles on the front windshield of her truck, Temple yelled at them and left the slaughterhouse for the day. She came back the next day and continued her work.

+ Initiative Eventually, Temple was told that she couldn’t continue to be on the slaughterhouse after she had already been sneaking in without a pass and did a few articles in magazines about the slaughterhouse.

+ What She did She went to the owner of the ranch and talked to him, in hopes of getting a pass. When she went to his office, she was covered in dirt and he told her that he only talks to people dressed a certain way. Temple didn’t care though. She, socially, didn’t know the difference. She continued to argue her case that she deserved a pass to work there as a writer. She took the initiative to see the owner and the persistence to make him say “yes.”

+ Motivation She was motivated by her goals to graduate high school, graduate college, graduate with a master’s, write up articles, talk to the people in power, and sneak into the slaughter house ranch in order to do her real life research.

+ A Humane Phenomenon It is agreed that Temple Grandin is a phenomenon on her own. If she would not have informed individuals that she met that she has autism, they would not have known. The magnificent work she has done in regard to her efforts in “humanizing” the cattle slaughter process.

+ Conclusion Temple Grandin was able to do all of the things she dreamed of despite her autism This was due to her support system, persistence, passion, and intelligence TAKE AWAY: Nothing should stop you from what you want or need to do. You can do anything that you put your mind to.
