Learning objective of this lesson: Learn the Anishnaabemowin words for items found in the kitchen. & Build confidence to share Anishnaabemowin words in the kitchen with your family.

Please follow this link to view a lesson on the “Double Vowel Sound System” it will assist with the pronunciations of the Anishnaabemowin words that you will learn in this lesson. Also, please print a hard copy of the Double Vowel Sound System for reference.

Two words in Anishnaabemowin can create one complete sentence. Bininan ziiwtaagan.  Pass the salt. Biidoon pabwin.  Bring the chair. Daapnan mnikwegan.  Pick up the cup.

Nin(d)moo bdakjii’an.  Hand him/her the fork. Nin(d)mooshin zaasekwaan.  Hand me the frying pan. Naadin pabwin.  Go and get the chair.

Practice creating and writing new sentences using other combinations of words. e.g. Nin(d)mooshin kik – Hand me the pot. Naadin mookmaan – Go and get the knife. Note: Practice using these simple sentences everyday. “Practice makes perfect” as they say… Hint: Tape your sentence sheet on one of your kitchen cabinet doors for easy reference.

Using the imperatives and kitchen item words that are written on a separate paper, create ten sentences using the conjunction miinwaa. Be sure to use maa and maam pii to further enhance your conversational language.

Biidoon maa pabwin. Bring the chair here. Nin(d)mooshin ziiwtaagan miinwa waasgan. Hand me the salt and pepper. Bininan emkwaan miinwaa naadin bdakjii’gan. Pass the spoon and go and get the fork.

Maam pii biidoon doopwin miinwaa naadin pabwin. Bring the table right here and bring the chair. Bininan naagan miinwa biidoon mnikwegan maa. Pass the dish and bring the cup here. Nindmoo mookmaan miinwaa nindmoosh emkwaan. Hand him/her the knife and hand me the spoon.

Practice the compound sentences that you have written with a friend or family member. Place items in various places in your kitchen and have your partner act out your request and the switch roles. Have fun!
