OBJECTIVE: I WILL BE ABLE TO USE #CUBA TO ANNOTATE THE TEXT. Steps for Success: 1) Do Now: Class of 2018 Sign Up 2) Finish Poems 3) Whole Class Learning: Vocabulary 4) Mini-lesson: Conflict in “Shooting an Elephant” 5) Individual Learning: #CUBA and vocabulary 6) Closing: 7) Homework: Blog Post on website

Background Knowledge Imperialism: a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force In this country, it means England’s control of BurmaBurma This deals with the theme of cultural identity because England tries to impose its cultural identity on another country. Our narrator also feels distant from his cultural identity. He is a police officer in a place far away from home and he tries to assert his authority over a culture that does not respect him.

Vocabulary to finish reading Oppressor: someone who treats someone else unfairly British Empire: the term for all the countries England controlled during imperialism Mahout: someone who cares for and trains an elephant

Conflict in “Shooting an Elephant” Man vs. Society Man vs. Self Our narrator does not want to shoot the elephant. The Burmese are very entertained by the idea of our narrator shooting the elephant. Our narrator does not want to shoot the elephant Our narrator feels pressure from the villagers, who normally treat him with disrespect, to shoot the elephant. He wants them to respect him and may shoot the elephant to earn that respect.

#CUBA? An annotation strategy # Number the paragraphs C ircle key words, places, dates U nderline important information B ox new words A rrows to show how ideas connect ? to mark parts of the text you’re unsure about.

Closing – Class Discussion Why did the narrator decide to shoot the elephant?

Homework For your homework tonight, pick three words that you encountered in your reading in class today. Please post the word, the definition, and the sentence in the text. Use for definitions. Please remember to sign your homework! Example: Nimble: coordinated, athletic When a nimble Burman tripped me up on the football field and the referee (another Burman) looked the other way, the crowd yelled with hideous laughter. Jeer: to insult, boo or hiss There were several thousands of them in town and none of them seemed to have anything to do except stand on street corners and jeer at Europeans. Petty: of little real importance, trivial I was sub-divisional police officer, and in an aimless, petty kind of way anti-European feeling was very bitter. - Ms. McAvoy
