PROJECT: NAVIGATING THE COMMUNITY HUS 1101: Introduction to Human Services PROJECT Issues Agency and their work

PROJECT PROCESS: PART 1 COMMUNITY ASSESSMENT Navigate and identify pressing issues in a community by Researching zipcode Reading newspapers Navigating websites Assignment 1 Write a paper on community assessment (3 pages) The paper must include demographics (statistics) of the community and frequent issues talked about on the media. Choose one issue that a group wants to investigate further and provide a rationale of choosing the issue

PROJECT PROCESS: PART 2 NAVIGATE AN AGENCY Choose a local community based agency which targets the identified issue Research the agency through visiting its website, getting a broacher, and etc. Visit the agency and request to speak with a Human Services professional worker. Have a discussion with the professional on the following topics: Mission, structure, and funding sources of the agency Recipients of services Challenges in the agency Interview clients on their satisfaction regarding the services.

PROJECT PROCESS: PART 2 NAVIGATE AN AGENCY (CONT’D) Assignment 2: Develop a client satisfaction survey Assignment 3: Analyze the information on the agency Analyze the client survey and analyze if the agency is providing adequate services to its target population Write a paper (3-4 pages) Paper must also include suggestions for the agency

PROJECT PART 3: PRESENTATION Have students write a formal invitation letter to the person in the agency for the presentation Students will make a presentation to their classmates as well as the representatives from the agencies.

HIGH IMPACT LEARNING: Openlab Throughout the project, each student must post reflection paragraphs on the openlab. Other students must respond to each other’s posts. Community based collaborative assignment

GEN ED LEARNING GOALS AND ASSESSMENT GOALS Students will demonstrate the knowledge on the roles of the human services professionals. Students will learn the different settings for human services practice. Students will demonstrate the knowledge on the interdependence of individuals, groups, and communities. Students will be able to assess agency strengths and challenges. Student will be able to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing.
