Spreadsheets Lesson 3: Formatting and formulas
Lesson Objectives To understand how to format a spreadsheet to improve the appearance To understand more complex formulas to find the average, minimum and maximum totals
Formulas Which formulas do we already know? Why do we use these formulas? Go to Common K>ICT>Year 7>Spreadsheets Open the file called Games
Average How would you work out the average of these numbers? Average = sum of elements/number of elements Average = ( )/8 Score
Games You need to fill in the income column (From F5 to F14) When you have worked out individual totals, use a formula to fill in the TOTAL INCOME cell

Average In excel we can make this process a lot easier. =AVERAGE(A1:A9) All formulas start with an = The name of the formula is AVERAGE The range of cells that we want to find the average for is A1 to A9
Max and Min You can work out the maximum number and the minimum number in the same way. =MAX(A1:A9) =MIN(A1:A9) Fill in the Average, Min and Max cells on your sheet

Formatting Formatting is when you use presentation tools to make something look more presentable. Which tools would you use to make the spreadsheet more presentable?
Borders and shading At the top of your page you have options to add a border. Select the cells you want to alter, then select the border you want to use. You can fill with the paint bucket and change the font colour too
Merge and Wrap If you want to merge some cells togeher, so that they become one big cell you need to Highlight the cells. Click MERGE AND CETNRE at the top. You might also want to wrap text. This puts the text onto more than one line
Data Type You should have noticed that the costs in spreadsheet do not have £ signs. Alter the type of data in the cell by highlighting all the ones that need changing Right click and select Format Cells Select the Currency type.
Your task Format your spreadsheet so that it looks more presentable. You may want to – Add a border – Change heading colours – Bold/Underline – Change costs to currency – Rezie text
