Outline Metadata in education industry: – Provide the overview of metadata & semantics in SIF specification – It contains two examples which may be related to M2M area Potential oneM2M Requirements 2

3 SIF in a Nutshell The SIF Association is a non-profit membership organization 3,200 Members from software vendors, school districts, state departments of education Impact on Primary and Secondary (pK-12) market in US, UK, Australia Develop a set of rules and definitions which enable software programs from different companies to share information – SIF specification SIF makes it possible for programs within a school or district to share data Meeting the Interoperability Challenge Define standard formats for shared data e.g., student demographics information Define standard naming conventions for this shared data Define the rules of interaction among software applications Energy & Facilities Management Student Info Library Automation

4 SIF Data Model & Object SIF Data Model A set of data structures (objects) that are implementable. A data model can be expressed in various formats such as XML, JASON, RDBMS DDL, etc. SIF Object The unit of exchange within SIF. Applications communicate at the object level when exchanging data. Anything that has a separate schema is a SIF Object. All objects have a RefId, which can be used in a zone to access the object AirHandler 2-50 ……

5 Facility & Energy Management The Facility and Energy Management objects are used to report energy usage and associated environmental information; 1.Thermostat settings and outside temperature measurements from the Building Automation System 2.Dynamic energy demand costs from smart meters 3.Energy Usage information from shadow meters from an Energy Management System

Transportation & Geographic Info This object exposes telematics information to the zone. Id of the hardware unit on the bus that tracks & reports location and status. Indicators and values provided by the hardware along with this position snapshot: Panic, Accident, Checkpoint, Door Open, etc.

7 Examples Mr. Woodall Charles William Chuck Mr. Woodall Charles William Chuck The metadata of data “Name ”in SIF ( 1 ) V2.5 The metadata of data “Name "in “JY/T 1002 - 2012” (education industry standard in China) From the above examples, we can see that: Some data in education industry may be related to M2M Syntax The data is structured in a hierarchical manner The data may has attributes Semantics The education industry has defined the semantics The semantics may be different between regions or SDOs

How to handle locale requirements in data modeling in SIF SIF Data Model Design Flow Source: Logical Model (international standard) Logical Level: UML Locale Logical Model (national standard) Composite Objects Entity Objects Physical Level: XSD UML to XSD (SIF Data Dictionary tool) Locale Data Model

9 Proposals Recommendation: Study the metadata from the education industry to see whether they are irrelevant to M2M work area. Potential requirements: The M2M system shall provide a common abstraction mechanism for various data models. The M2M system shall provide a mechanism to allow locale extension of the data models. The M2M system shall provide a mechanism to map the abstraction data model to physical data models.
