Dads Read State Library of Queensland

“Be their reading legend…”

Dads Read - Rationale Research shows that: Reading together for just 10 minutes is an investment in a child’s future. Dads reading with children is critical to helping them become good readers. The first few years of a child’s life are absolutely critical in providing the foundations for their health and wellbeing as adults—it’s never too early to start reading with a child.

“We all felt this was great for our first outing of Dads Read promotions and will be looking at repeating next year.” Jane Stronach, Senior Project Officer, Maroochydore Library Sunshine Coast Regional Council

Reading with My Father Initiated in April 2011: by Tablelands Regional Library Service in partnership with Lotus Glen Farm Correctional Centre, and funded through a State Library Queensland Expanding Horizons Grant Inmates self nominate to participate

Reading with My Father Outcomes Improved Literacy from participants and a real sense of self worth when they hear their edited CD Closer family – recognition by inmates of the impact of their mistake on the family Children read a story for the father in the local library Real tears / real connection

Reading with My Father Fantastic. My wife plays it to my daughter daily and I’m pleased she can hear my voice while I’m not there. A terrific way to keep that bond close and keep up the quality time for my daughter with her Daddy. Thank you so much. This really means a lot to us’. ‘My young fellow, seven years old, reads the book and listens to the CD every three or four days so he can listen to dad’

Reading with My Father ‘I thought it was fantastic that I could send two books I read out to my kids, but I could hardly believe my kids sent a book they read back to me. It was good for my kids to listen to my voice because I haven’t seen them for a couple of years. My kids said it was good to hear my voice and that I read a book for them’.
