Genesis 44 “ God Continues His Confrontation With His Covenant Family ”

Genesis 44: Now Joseph gave these instructions to the steward of his house: “Fill the men’s sacks with as much food as they can carry, and put each man’s silver in the mouth of his sack. 2 Then put my cup, the silver one, in the mouth of the youngest one’s sack, along with the silver for his grain.” And he did as Joseph said.

Genesis 44: As morning dawned, the men were sent on their way with their donkeys. 4 They had not gone far from the city when Joseph said to his steward, “Go after those men at once, and when you catch up with them, say to them, ‘Why have you repaid good with evil?

Genesis 44: 5 5 Isn’t this the cup my master drinks from and also uses for divination? This is a wicked thing you have done.’”

Genesis 44: When he caught up with them, he repeated these words to them. 7 But they said to him, “Why does my lord say such things? Far be it from your servants to do anything like that!

Genesis 44: We even brought back to you from the land of Canaan the silver we found inside the mouths of our sacks. So why would we steal silver or gold from your master’s house? 9 If any of your servants is found to have it, he will die; and the rest of us will become my lord’s slaves.”

Genesis 44: “Very well, then,” he said, “let it be as you say. Whoever is found to have it will become my slave; the rest of you will be free from blame.”

Genesis 44: Each of them quickly lowered his sack to the ground and opened it. 12 Then the steward proceeded to search, beginning with the oldest and ending with the youngest. And the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack. 13 At this, they tore their clothes. Then they all loaded their donkeys and returned to the city.

Genesis 44: Joseph was still in the house when Judah and his brothers came in, and they threw themselves to the ground before him. 15 Joseph said to them, “What is this you have done? Don’t you know that a man like me can find things out by divination?”

Genesis 44: “What can we say to my lord?” Judah replied. “What can we say? How can we prove our innocence? God has uncovered your servants’ guilt. We are now my lord’s slaves - we ourselves and the one who was found to have the cup.”

Genesis 44: But Joseph said, “Far be it from me to do such a thing! Only the man who was found to have the cup will become my slave. The rest of you, go back to your father in peace.”

Genesis 44: Then Judah went up to him and said: “Pardon your servant, my lord, let me speak a word to my lord. Do not be angry with your servant, though you are equal to Pharaoh himself. 19 My lord asked his servants, ‘Do you have a father or a brother?’

Genesis 44: And we answered, “We have an aged father, and there is a young son born to him in his old age. His brother is dead, and he is the only one of his mother’s sons left, and his father loves him.”

Genesis 44: “Then you said to your servants, ‘Bring him down to me so I can see him for myself.’

Genesis 44: And we said to my lord, ‘The boy cannot leave his father; if he leaves him, his father will die.’ 23 But you told your servants, ‘Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you will not see my face again.’ 24 When we went back to your servant my father, we told him what my lord had said.

Genesis 44: “Then our father said, ‘Go back and buy a little more food.’ 26 But we said, ‘We cannot go down. Only if our youngest brother is with us will we go. We cannot see the man’s face unless our youngest brother is with us.’

Genesis 44: “Your servant my father said to us, ‘You know that my wife bore me two sons. 28 One of them went away from me, and I said, “He has surely been torn to pieces.” And I have not seen him since. 29 If you take this one from me too and harm comes to him, you will bring my gray head down to the grave in misery.’

Genesis 44: “So now, if the boy is not with us when I go back to your servant my father, and if my father, whose life is closely bound up with the boy’s life, 31 sees that the boy isn’t there, he will die. Your servants will bring the gray head of our father down to the grave in sorrow.

Genesis 44: Your servant guaranteed the boy’s safety to my father. I said, ‘If I do not bring him back to you, I will bear the blame before you, my father, all my life!’

Genesis 44: “Now then, please let your servant remain here as my lord’s slave in place of the boy, and let the boy return with his brothers. 34 How can I go back to my father if the boy is not with me? No! Do not let me see the misery that would come on my father.”

1. What is Joseph ’ s purpose in having his brothers ’ money put back into their sacks a second time and having his own silver cup put into Benjamin ’ s sack? vs. 1 – 2

1. What is Joseph ’ s purpose in having his brothers ’ money put back into their sacks a second time and having his own silver cup put into Benjamin ’ s sack? vs. 1 – 2 Joseph, wisely adept at successfully creating tensions during their first two visits, now delivers his master stroke. He enlarges his demonstrations of kindness and sends them joyfully on their way. However, Joseph sees to it that this will suddenly and unexpectedly end in causing them even more grief.

1. What is Joseph ’ s purpose in having his brothers ’ money put back into their sacks a second time and having his own silver cup put into Benjamin ’ s sack? vs. 1 – 2 He effectively crushes and humbles them and tests their affection for Benjamin, because Joseph is judging their sincerity of repentance for what they had done against him. Joseph desires to be confident of their repentance before he reveals his himself to them. To do this he brings Benjamin into distress.

1. What is Joseph ’ s purpose in having his brothers ’ money put back into their sacks a second time and having his own silver cup put into Benjamin ’ s sack? vs. 1 – 2 Joseph’s dealings with his brothers must be seen as a complete, well- thought-out, closely connected plan. Although some of his dealings with his brothers appear to be harsh, Joseph’s real and genuine brotherly kindness saturates everything he does with them.

2. Why does Joseph send his steward after them and accuse them of returning evil for good? vs ?

2. Why does Joseph send his steward after them and accuse them of returning evil for good? vs ? This is Joseph’s favorite cup which he had perhaps carelessly left at the brother’s table to test their honesty, and they’re caught in the act. Why doesn’t he open Benjamin’s sack first since he knows that’s where it is?

2. Why does Joseph send his steward after them and accuse them of returning evil for good? vs ? Joseph is deliberately creating tension among them by accusing them of disrespect and scorn for the kindness he had just shown them by committing a bold act of theft of the ruler’s most treasured possession. The tension is heightened by opening their sacks from the oldest to the youngest.

3. What does the response of the brothers to Joseph ’ s steward reveal about the brothers? vs. 6 – 9

3. What does the response of the brothers to Joseph ’ s steward reveal about the brothers? vs. 6 – 9 The steward’s words come upon them like a thunderbolt. Again they are being humiliated as criminals. Since they know they are innocent, they welcome a search, which reveals they are guilty of the charges against them. They return in agony to Joseph and throw themselves at his feet confessing, “God has uncovered your servants’ guilt.”

4. Since Joseph knows his cup is in Benjamin ’ s sack, why does he have this steward speak the words of verse 10 to his brothers?

4. Since Joseph knows his cup is in Benjamin ’ s sack, why does he have this steward speak the words of verse 10 to his brothers? All the conditions are present for the brothers to commit another betrayal when Benjamin is accused. Given the opportunity – the right place and the right time - temptation reveals latent sin.

5. What is the significance of the brothers tearing their clothes in verse 13?

5. What is the significance of the brothers tearing their clothes in verse 13? The charges against Benjamin are like a sword struck through their hearts. Their response reveals Joseph’s testing has accomplished its purpose. They tear their clothes in grief.

6. Does Joseph practice divination? Why does he tell his brothers he can find things out by divination? vs. 15

6. Does Joseph practice divination? Why does he tell his brothers he can find things out by divination? vs. 15 Divination by cups, to predict the future, was a common superstition in ancient Egypt, as continues to be so. It would not be characteristic of Joseph, a pious believer in the true God, to be practicing it. We know he did not use divination to know the verdict on Benjamin. He probably mentions it for the sole purpose of enhancing his brothers’ awe of him.

7. What is the significance of the confession of the brothers in verse 16? Compare to Genesis 37:8.

7. What is the significance of the confession of the brothers in verse 16? Compare to Genesis 37:8. The brothers return and bow again before Joseph. Judah, their spokesman, confesses that God has found out their sin and guilt and tells Joseph that they are all his slaves.

8. Why is Joseph singling out Benjamin as the only one of the brothers who will stay behind to be his slave in verse 17?

8. Why is Joseph singling out Benjamin as the only one of the brothers who will stay behind to be his slave in verse 17? He is putting their affection for Benjamin and their father under close examination. If they had left Benjamin in bonds as a slave and had gone away contentedly, and no doubt Joseph would have released him soon.

8. Why is Joseph singling out Benjamin as the only one of the brothers who will stay behind to be his slave in verse 17? Perhaps Joseph is trying Benjamin’s temper, to see if he can endure hardships with the calmness and composure of mind that typify wise and good men. Is Benjamin his brother in spirit as well as blood?

9. On what basis does Judah plead to Joseph for Benjamin? vs

9. On what basis does Judah plead to Joseph for Benjamin? vs Judah does not mention the crime Benjamin is charged with because he cannot prove Benjamin’s innocence. If he had denied Benjamin’s guilt, he would be accusing Joseph of being unjust. Therefore he appeals to Joseph’s pity and mercy. Little does Judah know of what a tender subject he is touching upon in Joseph’s heart.

Is there any significance that Judah is the one interceding for Benjamin in vs ? If so, what is it?

Is there any significance that Judah is the one interceding for Benjamin in vs ? If so, what is it? Judah shows he has been set free of the jealousy that led him to sell Joseph. He now thinks more about his father than of himself. God, who has been at work in Joseph, has been at work in Judah, too!
