The Truth About Maps Mercator Map Gall-Peter’s Projection Map The Mercator Projection Map distorts the sizes of countries and continents, making it inaccurate. It shows Africa as roughly the same size as Greenland, but in actual fact, Africa is 14 times larger. It was introduced in 1569. The Gall-Peter’s Projection Map is based on the actual size of all places-countries, continents and oceans. All horizontal lines are parallel and all vertical lines are parallel to each other. This was introduced to Europe in 1974.

The Truth About Maps Mercator Map Gall-Peter’s Projection Map Alaska is drawn about 3 times as large as Mexico, but it is smaller than Mexico by 0.1 million square miles. Europe is drawn larger than South America, when it is 3.8 million square miles and just above half of the area of South America’s 6.9 million square miles. It is fair to every person-there is no discrimination or bias towards races as every country is accurately drawn. Therefore, social justice agencies such as Caritas would prefer it more than the Mercator Map, that alters the size of countries. This may be seen as inequality and unfairness.

The Truth About Maps Gall-Peter’s Projection Map Mercator Map As you can see, the Mercator Map makes countries’ and continents’ sizes very different, in terms of comparison, to reality. However, it was created in 1569 and is traditionally used. Thus, many people may get quite confused when using the Peters Projection Map. On the other hand, the Peter’s Projection equally spaces every land mass. Every area on the map is symbolically equal to another area of the same size. Unfortunately, neither geographers nor cartographers believe either map is appropriate for our modern world.
