High-resolution spectroscopy and light source technology laboratory Institute of Atomic Physics and Spectroscopy University of Latvia, Riga Presentation for Environment Infoday FP7-ENV September 2009

High-resolution spectroscopy and light source technology laboratory Laboratory is a part of the Institute of Atomic Physics and Spectroscopy, University of Latvia Research area relevant to FP7-ENV-2010 – mercury concentration measurements using Zeeman atomic absorption spectrometry Contact information: –Egils Bogans, –Skunu Str. 4, Riga, LV-1050, Latvia –

Our experience and capabilities in mercury detection/measurements Equipment used – Zeeman atomic absorption spectrometer RA-915+ –Detection floor limit in air – 2 ng/m 3 –Measurement frequency – real-time (once per second) Practical experience –Location-aware (GPS-connected) mobile and stationary mercury concentration monitoring in ambient air –Measurement of mercury concentration in liquid and solid samples (e.g., bog peat) –Mercury detection in buildings and on environmental objects

Our ideas and proposed cooperation opportunities Establishment of systematic mercury concentration monitoring network in Baltic states –Geographical distribution, seasonal and long-term development trends of Hg concentration –Hg concentration investigations in areas of special interest (e.g., forestry impact on mercury presence in soil and water) Possible responsibilities –Data collection and processing –Management and coordination of regional activities Intent – to be a member of larger consortium –Target activity – ENV , Global Observation Systems for Mercury –We are open to cooperation in other activities as well
