WAVES 11/16/15

Waves What is the first thing you think of when you hear the word waves?

Waves Different examples of waves

Two types of waves Transverse Longitudinal

Longitudina l waves Displacement in the same direction of movement. These are also called compression waves. Examples slinky, explosions

Transverse Waves Wave that vibrates perpendicular to direction of motion, most commonly a sine wave. Examples of transverse waves: ocean waves, slinky up and down

Parts of a wave Crest Amplitude Wavelength Frequency

Velocity of a wave The speed of a wave as it goes across the wave V=(wavelength)*(frequency) Light has a fixed speed so depending on the frequency will determine the wavelength.

Practice Problems Get a whiteboard for each group, and solve each problem to present to the class.

Phet simulation Complete the phet simulation packet by yourself and explore the different things that happen to the wave as you change the settings.

Wave Behavior What did you see in the phet simulation? Fixed end? Open end?

Superposition of waves Two waves can combine into a new wave when they meet. constructive destructive
