Talking About Emotions Class

Look at these 2 lists: List #1 Happy Excited Positive Relieved Joyful List #2 Sad Worried Negative Disappointed Depressed What is the difference between these 2 lists?

List #1 is all good things –positive things. List #2 is all bad things –negative things. Now, let’s look at some of the vocabulary you will need to talk about emotions:

Excited vs. Worried Both “excited” and “worried” are feelings you might have when thinking about the future. “Excited” is when you are looking forward to something. You can’t wait for something good to happen. “Worried” is for when you think something bad might happen in the future.

Let’s try to think of some example situations in which you might feel excited. Then, try to think of a time when you might feel worried.

Relieved vs. Disappointed Both “relieved” and “disappointed” are emotions you feel after something has happened. “Relieved” is when something positive happens after you were worrying. “Disappointed” is when something negative happens.

For Example: I didn’t study for the exam, so I was worried. But I still got a pretty good mark (88%), so I was relieved.  I thought something bad was going to happen, but it was OK in the end.

Another Example: I did study for the exam, so I was expecting to get a good mark. But I got a bad mark (69%), so I was disappointed.  I thought something good was going to happen, but it was bad in the end.

Joyful vs. Depressed “Joyful” is when you (and usually everyone) are very happy. “Depressed” is when you are very sad for some time.

Examples: Spending Spring Festival holiday with my whole family was a joyful time. When my dog died I was depressed for many weeks.

New Vocabulary Pleased  Proud  Nervous  Eager  Annoyed Embarrassed / Ashamed Relaxed Reluctant  Undecided 

Pleased When you are satisfied; when you have a good feeling about a result. Her father was pleased that she decided to become a doctor. Try to think of your own example.

Annoyed When something is really bothering you. Our upstairs neighbours were moving furniture all day. I was so annoyed! Try to think of your own example.

Nervous When someone is worried / anxious about the future. -OR- Has a lot of energy. Someone who can’t sit still. The children were nervous about entering the dark cave. You twitch (shake) your leg when you’re nervous.

Relaxed The opposite of nervous. Cool, calm, laid-back, easygoing. Listening to music while I study helps me to feel relaxed. The baby is so relaxed! She almost never cries.

Eager When someone really really wants to do something. --Happily looking forward to doing something. The week before the semester was over all the students were eager to go on holidays. Try to think of your own example.

Reluctant This is the opposite of eager. When someone does not want to do something, or is concerned about doing something. The 5-year-old child was reluctant to jump into the water before his first swimming lesson. Try to think of your own example.
