Mrs. Lord Lesson 1

 Approximately one in two people who smoke throughout their lives will die prematurely  The chemicals in cigarettes are extremely harmful. Some of these chemicals include: 1. Arsenic- rat poisoning 2. Acetone- nail polish 3. Formaldehyde- embalming fluid 4. Nitrobenzene – gasoline 5. Hydrogen cyanide – poison found in gas chambers 6. Lead – paint 7. Vinyl chloride- garbage bags

 Tobacco plants grown readily in warmer climates  When tobacco leaves are taken and dried for 2-3 yrs. During this process the leaves are combined with hundreds of ingredients called additives.  Additives are the chemicals that make the tobacco taste better, moist, and burn longer.  And example of an additive is ammonia which can be found in urine and cleaning products

 When a cigarette is lit the burning tobacco produces smoke that is released into the air.  This smoke contains thousands of chemicals.  Benzene – a known carcinogen  Two others are Tar and Carbon Monoxide

 Tobacco leaves + chemicals = tobacco products

What tobacco does in the body Fu-GKP4&feature=related Benefits of Quitting RkziXFg&feature=related

 Tobacco comes in many forms:  Cigarettes  Cigars or pipes  Smokeless tobacco. (Aka chew)

 Most common form of tobacco  Cigarettes put millions of users at risk for emphysema ( is a long-term, progressive disease of the lungs that primarily causes shortness of breath. In people with emphysema, the tissues necessary to support the physical shape and function of the lungs are destroyed ) heart disease, cancer (many different forms), infertility, and stroke.lungs  Each year more than 430, 000 people in the U.S. die from disease caused by cigarette smoke.

 Emphysema  Cancer

 Cigars contain the same dangerous substances as cigarettes but in much larger quantities.  Why do you think this is ?  One large cigar can contain seven times more tar and four times more nicotine than cigarettes  Cigar smokers are 4-10 times more likely to contract mouth, larynx, and esophagus cancer than non smokers.  They also have a much higher risk of dying from heart disease.

 This is a type of tobacco that is chewed or sniffed.  Common names are: chew, spit, snuff.  Many people believe this type is safer because you do not inhale- but this is FALSE  You just absorb the chemicals and toxins directly into your mouth or nose.  Not only does chewing tobacco cause numerous types of cancer it is related to tooth loss and gum disease.

'Man without a face' warns of cancer risk. Former baseball player Rick Bender speaks about surviving oral cancer caused by chewing tobacco. He lost part of his tongue and jaw in surgeries This can also cause permanent gum recession, mouth sore lesions in the mouth, and cancers of the mouth and throat

 Tobacco contains approximately 4000 chemicals.  Over 200 of them have been proven to be toxic to humans.

 Nicotine = is an addictive drug found in tobacco leaves and in all tobacco products.  Anything addictive means the user will crave the drug.  When smoked nicotine takes less than 7 seconds to reach the brain and 30 minute after consumed to leave the body and begin to create discomfort in the user.

 Tar = is a dark, thick, sticky liquid that forms when tobacco burns.  When smokers inhale the tar gets into the lungs.  It leaves a residue that destroys cilia= the tiny little hair like structures that protect the lungs.

 If you smoke a half a pack a day for a year you will have this much tar in your lungs.

 Carbon Monoxide= is a colorless, odorless, poisonous gas that is produced when tobacco burns.  When smoked it passed through the lungs into the blood stream.  It then reduces the amount of oxygen in the blood  This can cause weaken muscles, and blood vessels, leading to heart attacks and strokes.

1. Nicotine travels from the lungs into the bloodstream and into the brain 2. Hr and BP increase 3. Skin, breath, hair, and clothing smell of smoke 4. Nausea and dizziness are reported due to the chemicals entering the bloodstream 5. Your senses of smell and taste are compromised 6. Shortness of breath and coughing occur during simple exercise and activity 7. Coughing up tar and mucus from lungs. 8. Getting sicker more frequently and staying ill longer.

 When you smoke you are not only harming yourself but everyone around you.  When a cigarette is lit the smoke that is produced and the smoke exhaled from your lung enters the air.  This is called Environmental Tobacco Smoke or ETS.  ETS is also called second hand smoke  People who breath this in are introduced to all the chemicals smokers are and are at risk for the same health problems smokers are. Why do you think this is?
