Backwash optimization
Filtration Removal of particulate or microbiological contaminant Turbidity Suspended solids Colloids Bacteria Knowing when to start and when to finish your backwash
Backwashing Purge solids removed from water during filtration Solids collected on/within the filter are removed by reversing water flow up through the filter Restore/maintain filtrate flux
Backwash When to start backwash Run Time - depends on filters but 50-72 hours max Head Loss - 6-8 foot head loss Particle or Turbidity Breakthrough 0.3 NTU particle counts increase When to stop backwash Pre-set time period Visual operator inspection Volume Turbidity results
Why Monitor Backwash Under washing Accumulation of solids in the bed Mudballs “Cementing” portions of the bed Poor quality water Short filter runs Over washing Excess water use Short filter runs loss of filter media Increased operations costs Ineffective filter ripening
Turbidity to Determine Backwash Duration Why turbidity? Turbidity reduction is primary purpose of filtration Time based backwash can often lead to under backwash or over backwash The American Water Works Association (AWWA) has recommended terminating backwash when the turbidity is in the range of 10 to 20 NTU in order to leave enough particulate matter within the filter to sustain effective performance during the beginning of the next filter run.
Backwash Turbidity Hach Solitax sc in-line Turbidity Sensor to monitor filter backwash provides consistency in the wash process based on a real time turbidity measurement The mounting allows the probe to be place directly in the filter trough or near the top of the bed for optimal measurement Use of turbidity meters will ensure that backwash cycles happen only when necessary. This saves power! Most cycles are timed. Whether the filter needs it or not at a certain time the filter is cleaned. Use of a turbidity analyzer will cause backwashed only when necessary and will turn off the cleaning cycle when the turbidity reaches a pre set level
Case Study: New Salem Water Treatment Plant, Bethlehem Town, New York
New Salem Water Treatment Plant Capacity : 6 MGD Filtration type : Rapid Sand Filter (12 Filters) Raw Water : approx. 3 NTU Finished Water : approx. 0.04 NTU Backwash Criteria (Before) : 96 hrs filter run time, 6 ft head loss, 0.2 NTU filter effluent (whichever comes first) Backwash duration (Before) : 10 min high rate wash, with surface wash
Approach Solitax Turbidity/Solids sensor Installed above filter media Infrared light source, reduced colour interference Wide measuring range of up to 4000 NTU Installed above filter media
Bethlehem, NY Baseline Backwash Turbidity profile
Bethlehem, NY Modified Backwash Turbidity Profile
Bethlehem, NY Comparing Profiles 6 mins of savings per filter
Results Good agreement between backwash turbidity profiles Confidence with using turbidity profiles for backwash Reduced high flow backwash by 50%, from 11 to 5 mins Increase productivity by reducing waste water Energy saving Save approx. 7.5 MG (12 filters) of water annually About USD $15,000
innovation
What is innovation ? Who are the best innovators? Dr. Russell Young, Global Chief Technology Officer, Hach Comp. Joining Hach Company in 1995 as a Senior Research Scientist, he was the lead technologist in the development/commercialization of luminescence based technologies for the determination of dissolved oxygen (DO) . (Roll-Play for 1 min)
Roll-Play - EXAMPLE : Use any sheet of paper you have in front of you to draw as many items that are circular in shape as possible..………… YOU HAVE 1 MIN !!
Roll-Play 1 minute End
Roll-Play - SOME EXAMPLES :
Roll-Play How many did you get? 1 – 4 5 – 8 8 – 11 11 – 15

A leader in industry firsts: COD LDO RTC Innovation spotlight A leader in industry firsts: COD LDO RTC
COD – a true innovation Developed by Dr. Bruno Lange in 1975 Pre-measured reagents Quick and accurate Less time, less glassware Reduce errors Environmentally friendly Barcode to eliminate error Automatic Wavelength detection 10 x measurements (rejects abnormal readings) In EU recycling avaiiable ISO 15705 approved
Transmitted Blue Light ldo – How it works Blue light is transmitted to the sensor The luminescent molecules in the sensor are excited by the blue light The molecules relax emitting red light The red light is detected by the probe Low maintenance No Drift and no contamination Plug and Play with Hach’s digital technology Transmitted Blue Light Emitted Red Light Photo Diode Reference Red LED The Life Span of Luminescence is the time required for the molecules to relax from their excited state.
RTC: real time control Control on/off aeration through ammonia & nitrate. Add just enough DO to meet the ammonia setpoint. Feed just enough chemical to meet setpoint. This graphic introduces the bigger picture of RTC modules, and emphasize that only Hach offers the Real Time Controller. Feed exact polymer to meet sludge density setpoint. Calculate & maintain the best SRT for your system. Tighter Process Monitoring and Controls Minimizes operational costs (energy, chemicals)
RTC Innovation Hach’s RTC (Real Time Control) solutions are complete off-the-shelf system Adjust treatment processes in real time, keeping your facility compliant while reducing treatment costs Why target aeration processes?
Optimizing Innovation What benefits does optimizing bring? DID YOU KNOW? Austria began measuring and optimizing wastewater treatment plants 10 years ago. As a result they are seeing much reduced power consumption with the average power use decreasing by over 40%. Austria now has some of the lowest power use per population equivalent of wastewater treated. Switzerland and Germany are following the same process to achieve reductions and have produced benchmark requirements to promote energy savings.
Energy Efficiency In Treatment Plants RTC Innovation What happens due to lack of intervention and understanding Energy Efficiency In Treatment Plants Plant Commissioned Significant Performance Gap Relative Power Consumption What Should Happen Because of Operator Efficiency Management Net Result : Greater Operation Costs Time (Years) When was the last time a relative comparison was done between Year 1 and now?
