THE INTERNATIONAL CRIME COURT CzieglerSS2023

The Establishment of the ICC  The International Crime Court (ICC) came into practice on July 1,  In the 1990’s after the end of the Cold War, tribunals, such as the International Criminal Tribunal, were only able to try crimes committed within a specific time frame during a specific conflict. In order to ensure that the crimes would be tried, like the crimes committed in Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia, there was a general agreement that a permanent criminal court was needed. ICC vs. International Court of Justice  The ICC is able to exercise jurisdiction over..  Crimes committed on the territory of any State Party  Crimes committed by citizens of any State Party  Any situation referred to the Court under the binding authority of the Security Council  Or, where a non-State Party has accepted the ICC’s jurisdiction with respect to crimes committed on its territory or by its citizens.  The International Court of Justice was designed to deal primarily with disputes between states in the USA. It does not have jurisdiction over the criminal responsibility of individuals. CzieglerSS2023 International Crime CourtInternational Court of Justice

Canada and the ICC  Canada joined the ICC on December 18, 1998 and was the 14 th country to sign the Rome Statute of the ICC.  Canada is still involved in the ICC. In 2006 there was also a Canadian, Judge Kirsch, re-elected as the President of the Court. CzieglerSS2023

ICC’s Concerns Regarding Children  Children are very vulnerable because of the young age, and dependence on others. Children are widely affected by the poverty, alienation, and homelessness brought on by armed conflicts. Children are also used as soldiers.  Because of this, the ICC tries to ensure that children's rights are protected. CzieglerSS2023 Photo Credit: Canada and the International Criminal Court

Personal Opinion: Is the ICC important? Why is it, or is not, necessary in today’s society?  I feel that the ICC is important. It is a necessity into today's society. In the past there have been many cases where crimes against humanity have been committed without punishment, which only encourages others to disregard laws of humanity. The ICC is necessary to help keep some peace and punish those who initiate and participate in cases of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. I believe that there remains a need for the International Crime Court. CzieglerSS2023
