Warm-Up The other day in class, I used the analogy that an author’s rhetorical method is similar to the method of brushing teeth. For your warm-up, I want you to create your own analogy!!  An author’s rhetorical method is similar to ___________.  Explain what you mean!!!  What it is (tools)  What it does (outcome)  How it does that (method) Note: Show example précis to class

HW Due  Bush & Obama annotations  Bush “Address to Joint Session of Congress” & Obama “2002 Speech Against the Iraq War”  Obama: 2009 Inaugural Address & 2013 Inaugural Address  Partner-score your annotations a) Record the score on the work itself b) Record the score on the Unit 2 Rubric & initial next to the score

Compare and Contrast  Team 1: Compare and contrast Bush’s “Address to Joint Session of Congress” & Obama’s “2002 Speech Against the Iraq War.” Consider thesis, RM, purpose, audience/tone. Discuss similarities and differences in construction and in purpose. Be ready to report to the class.  Team 2: Compare and contrast Obama’s 2009 & 2013 Inaugural Address. Consider thesis, RM, purpose, audience/tone. Discuss similarities and differences in construction and in purpose. Be ready to report to the class.  How do the authors create a sense of “us” and of “them” in their speeches?
