Characteristics of Romanticism Romanticism, both transcendentalist and dark, came from a short, rebellious era of authors. Romanticism derived from the English rebels around the 1800s, and, in some areas, peaked about mid-century. It was a literary way of showing opposing opinions of the establishment of an aristocratic society and “enlightened” favoritism. Romanticism was mostly accepted amongst different forms of growing art (i.e. visual, musical, and literary).

Characteristics of romanticism: The rediscovery of individual artists Romance is used to describe this form of literature because it refers to the descriptive imagery and natural occurrences or phenomena that are often featured in dark romanticism. Edgar Allan Poe Born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1809. Both of his parents passed when Poe was only three years old. Poe was adopted by John Allan, a wealthy tobacco merchant, and his wife, where they raised Edgar in Richmond, Virginia. Poe dreamed of being an author at a young age in emulation of his childhood hero, Lord Byron, the British poet. Many of Poe’s writes were inspired by people that Poe had met throughout his lifetime.
