How would you describe the culture of early West African kingdoms? European scholars rediscovered the works of Greek and Roman philosophers, geographers, and mathematicians. Europeans made key navigational instruments which allowed them to travel long distances and explore the world. Three great empires rouse in West Africa- Ghana, Mali, and Songhai. All three gained power and wealth through the trade of gold and salt. Slavery in Africa existed for centuries before Europeans landed there. Kings often enslaved their own people in exchange for trade items. The culture of Africa was centered around the trade routes that passed through the Saharah desert.
