Physical vs. Chemical Changes. Anything with mass AND volume.
Mass, color, volume, and weight are examples of physical properties. A physical property can be observed or measured without changing the substance. Example:

Properties of Matter. Matter  Matter is anything that has volume and mass and takes up space.
What is a Property? A property is a characteristic that describes an object or a substance. All matter can be described based on its physical properties.
A Physical Property is a property that can be observed without changing the make up of the substance. You just look at it - or measure it. Examples are:

Matter, The Atom, & Subatomic Particles. Matter Anything that has mass and occupies space is matter. A collection of matter with all the same chemical.
What is a property of matter? Characteristic of that type of matter Can be physical or chemical property Can be observed using your senses Cannot be observed.
Elementary Matter. Define Matter Matter is everything around you, and is anything formed with atoms and molecules or that possess mass. Mass can be defined.

Section A change in matter from one form to another is known as phase change. There are four main kinds. A substance always loses or gains heat.

What’s the Matter? What are properties of matter? Mrs. Haering’s class

Physical Properties of Matter Color State Smell Taste Can you name physical properties of cheese?

Physical Change A physical change changes what the object looks like without changing what the object is made of. What could cause a physical change in a piece of cheese?

Melt the cheeseGrate the cheese Cut the cheese Paint the cheese

Chemical Properties of Matter A chemical property is a property that describes how a substance reacts with other substances. The only way that you can observe a material’s chemical property is to change the material to a different kind of material.

Chemical Change During a chemical change, a new substance is formed. You can have a chemical change in paper when you burn it, because ashes are a different substance than paper.
