My Plate Improved Meal Assignment Andy Yone and Zachary Clark

What Meal We Are Replacing  Andy had by far the worst meal day between the two of us.  Breakfast: 2 cups of water  Lunch: 2 cans of Sprite, 2 glasses of water, 4 Pizza Flavored Hot Pockets  Dinner: 2 cups of water, 4 Pizza Flavored Hot Pockets  Snacks: 4 Pizza Flavored Hot Pockets

What is Wrong With This Meal?  This meal lacks most of everything needed for a nutritious day of eating!  The only substantial Nutrients obtained was the Fat from Saturated Fat and Cholesterol.  The only substantial Minerals obtained was Sodium and Iron, and Sodium was far over the needed intake.  That days meal provided barely any required Vitamins.  This meal is horrible!

What Kind of Meal Will Be An Improvement?  Almost any decent meal would be an improvement over soda and hot pockets!  Replacing soda with juice, and increasing water intake would be a good start.  Branching out and eating more varied foods throughout the day would also be a major improvement.

Suggested Improved Meal  Breakfast:  1 cup of 100% Cranberry Juice.  2 cup of plain oatmeal, cooked.  1 8oz container of yogurt, plain.  Lunch:  1 apple, raw.  1 can of low sodium canned tomato soup.  1 grilled ham and cheese sandwich, made with margarine.

Suggested Improved Meal Continued  Dinner:  1 cup of 2% reduced fat milk.  2 cups of fresh cooked green beans, no added salt or fat.  1 Pork Chop, grilled, with lean and fat eaten.  Snacks:  1 cup of popcorn, air popped, no added butter or oil  A total of 8 glasses of water, consumed throughout the day.

Critique of Suggested Improvements  The calories consumed in this meal plan is roughly 1600 calories, which could possibly not be enough energy to get you through the day.  The amount of dietary fiber fell short of the daily goal by 14 grams.  For Minerals, we would be under target for Potassium and Magnesium.  For Vitamins, the meal is under target for Vitamin A, C, D, E, K, Folate, Niacin, and Choline.

Final Word  While not a perfect meal plan, this meal plan would provide a vast improvement over the previous meal plan of 12 hot pockets and soda.  This would be a great starting point for starting to eat healthier!
