Motivation with positive attitude “Goals are dreams with deadlines.” ~quote by Diana Scharf Hunt “Our goals can only be reached through a vehicle of a plan, in which we must fervently believe, and upon which we must vigorously act. There is no other route to success.” ~quote by Stephen A. Brennan 5

General Questions 6

Assignment (Get started)! The interview is due no later than the last day of Unit 8. Download the template summary found in Unit 7. (Use the 3 steps to plan.) Select the person you want to interview. Make contact to set up your date and time. “In person” interviews are most valuable. Do everything possible to make it a person to person! Be sure to choose a candidate who holds a position you are interested in achieving- Network. Attend this interview as if it is a job interview for you! 7

Tips What do you suggest for your peers to make this interview experience the best it can possibly be? 8

General Questions 9

Unit 7: Goals and Planning Short and long term goals. Qualities of goals (based on values and beliefs). Two goals: Performance vs. outcome S.M.A.R.T goals (Specific, measurable, action-oriented, realistic and timed.) 10

Why set goals? 11

Setting long term goals Before you say "my goal is to retire to the Caribbean," it is important to take stock and analyze your situation from a different perspective. While you may truly be able to retire to the Caribbean, HOW will you do that? A new job? A higher income? Less responsibilities? Be specific when thinking about long term goals. Use critical thinking when answering in Unit 7 discussion! Refer back to class reading. Demonstrate you read the class material. I want to see a cited source. Quote by using (KU Course, CS113-22, 2010). 12

S.M.A.R.T goals As our class reading states, “S.M.A.R.T” stands for (KU Course, CS113, 2010): S Specific M Measurable A Attainable R Relevant T Time-bound For example, instead of having “to sail around the world” as a goal, it is more powerful to say “To have completed my trip around the world by December 31, 2015.” Obviously, this will only be attainable if a lot of preparation has been completed beforehand! Be specific with your goals. 13

Six steps to achievable goals With every goal you must follow the 6 P’s: Prioritize: You may have several goals. Prioritize them on your list. Positive: Use positive language. "I will …", "I’ll be…", "I’ll have…." Precise: Be precise. "I will have supper with my family three nights a week" rather than "I will be home earlier.” Performance: Measure your performance. Set time for starting and completing your goal. "May 1 – I will be home at 5:30 three nights this week." Practical: Make your goals practical. Do you have the control to make this work or do you rely on other people to meet your goal? Personal: Is this goal a personal goal or someone else’s desire for you? 14

Goal setting Here is the goal setting method I suggest: 1. Have a BIG GOAL to strive for. 2. Break it into a series of smaller goals. 3. Break the smaller goals down into monthly and weekly goals. 4. Break them down further into daily goals. 15

Let’s discuss… Why might we not meet our goals? 16

Identifying Success How will you know you have reached your goal – what marker or milestone will identify your success? Remember that Performance goals will provide better control than Outcome goals, so it’s best to measure the steps along the route to your destination. Outcome goals=end results. Performance goals=the path taken for the end results. 17

Realistic Goals A goal must be achievable. Have you researched enough to know it’s possible? Do you know someone else who has accomplished this same goal as yours? Goals set too high may be discouraging, but setting the bar too low will not provide motivation. 18

Timed Goals Each goal must have some sort of deadline. Some flexibility may be necessary, but deadlines help keep us motivated and focused towards completing our goals. 19

Case Study on Lara Who would like to volunteer to give us a short review on Lara before we start with the case study questions? What do you know about her? 20

Lara Case Study Lara is a stay-at-home, married mother of two small children. The past few years have been financially difficult for the family, so Lara has decided to go back to school to get a good paying job and help support her family. She would like a career that allows her to stay at home with her children as much as possible. Her goals right now are to get in and out of college quickly and start earning money as soon as possible. Lara is into arts and crafts and has always been interested in starting her own business to sell them. Although she has no prior experience or knowledge about owning a business, she frequents craft shops and fairs and has some knowledge of what other people sell. She has decided to go back to school to become an entrepreneur. 21

Question #1 Did Lara identify both her long-term and her short-term goals, and did she plan appropriate steps to achieve them? 22

Question #2 How would you help Lara craft a set of goals in terms of becoming an entrepreneur that fit with the S.M.A.R.T (specific, measurable, action-oriented, realistic, and timed) approach? 23

Question #3 How would talking to a shop owner or other entrepreneur help Lara formulate her own goals? 24

Grading rubric How many total points is your professional interview worth? How will you tie-in the interview with Unit 7 and Unit 8 reading? How is the reference wrote in the body of your text? Remember, we already covered “Writing” so we should now be using a proper cited source in our work. Thank you. 25

Any General Questions? Seminar is coming to an end, soon. Let’s wrap-up the evening. 26

Seminar Concluded Good night. Have a great week! My office hours are posted on the class syllabus. My AIM ID is: DrDenhard. THE END… 27
