Band Aid
Band Aid was established in 1984by Bob Geldof (lead singer from Boomtown Rats), to raise funds for Africa famine relief.
Geldof was inspired after watching a television documentary on famine in Ethiopia.
Band Aid released a charity single, ‘Do they know it’s Christmas ?’ Bob Geldof wrote the lyrics and Midge Ure wrote the music and produced the track.
Paul Young, Boy George, George Michael, Simon LeBon, Sting and Bono each sang a verse of the song whilst the remaining artists joined in for the Chorus.
The single was released in November, 1984.
$14 million was raised for famine relief in Africa. The first relief shipment of over $70,000 worth of food and medical supplies was delivered to Ethiopia on March 11, 1985.
