Explain the condition (physically and mentally) of the group after they successfully raft Horn Creek Rapid and evade the helicopters. They have a high energy level. Star is apprehensive because of her premonition of death. Adam, still clowning around, punctures his foot. Troy is preoccupied and domineering. Jessie demonstrates stability.

Why doesn’t Troy scout Granite Falls? What are the results? Helicopters are parked where they would have to land their rafts. During a tense run, Troy and Freddy successfully guide the boats through the rapid.

Explain the conflict between Troy and Freddy as the group approaches Crystal. They encounter heavy rain, and the rapid is ferocious. Troy talks about how to run the rapid; Freddy disagrees and thinks they should carry the gear and walk around through the boulders. Troy and Adam attempt to raft the rapid; the others follow Freddy.

What are the results of Troy’s actions What are the results of Troy’s actions? How does Freddy again prove his ability? Troy’s boat flips, and he and Adam barely escape alive. Adam dislocates his shoulder. Freddy is the key person in salvaging the boat. He replaces Adam’s shoulder. Freddy advises against spending the night there, but Troy insists. Realizing the danger, Freddy secures the most essential gear.
