Tech Prod I Final Scene Design for Sandra and the Janitor by William Packard Taylor Elliott

MUSIC “Nightmare Song” by Adrian Kerrihard Lyrics include: “The things that creep around at night/are okay/for you” “If you could just let the echos ring” “The monsters peeling paint at night/they are safe/with you” This is an eerie, haunting sound and the woman’s sweet, innocent voice gives you a sense of security, but at parts of the song, she sings in a shockingly low and menacing pitch.

Costume Design: Sandra What the script tells us: …dressed in an ancient black silk ankle-length dress(11). …underneath she is wearing a man’s white shirt and Levi’s (15). What I want: ill-fitting clothes, so that it appears she’s always in a costume; haunting.

Costume Design: Janitor What the script tells us: he enters in bedroom slippers, carrying a mop (11). He is a janitor. What I want: muted, boring colors; reminiscent of my papa; tired and dirty.

Janitor: Highlight wrinkles; volumize and gray hair (emphasize balding); highlight check bones; dull and tired eyes. Sandra: Unkempt hair and bangs to hide her forehead and her secrets; overemphasize eyeliner so it drips when she cries; give her earrings to add flare for the dramatics; add freckles and blush to remind everyone she’s only 17. Make-Up Design

Original Sketches

Final Groundplan ½ inch scale What the audience sees: three walls with one door frame/door Furniture pieces: cot, clothes hanger, small dresser, wooden chair, mop bucket, tall bucket, a stool, and a small tea table.

Audience View 1/4 inch scale

Color Scheme I want the background to fade to represent transcending into the basement apartment, where top is light and possibilities, and bottom is intense and blindingly dark. Nightmarish; where a candle would stand out.

Lighting Suggestions and Inspirations

In conclusion… Dedication and Flexibility! Technical Production really emphasized the importance of script analysis, interpretation, and group work. I think everyone in the class worked really hard in working on You Can’t Take it With You and together we learned a lot about set construction and design. I also learned a lot about the importance of budgeting and recycling materials; it’s easy and necessary to try to save the department money. I would have liked to learn more about the process of lighting, but I learned so much about set construction that I’m excited to help with the next set.
